Theobald de Verdun1

M, d. Jul 27, 1316
Reference11-30, 70-32
Theobald de Verdun was Lord of Weoberley.2 He It seems that it was in Ireland that Elizabeth de Clare met Theobaldde Verdun, himself a widower. His wife, Maud Mortimer, was thedaughter of Edmund Mortimer and Marguerite de Fiennes, and the sisterof the infamous Roger Mortimer (Queen Isabella's lover). They hadthree daughters, Joan, Elizabeth, and Margery, before Maud died in1312 following childbirth with a fourth child, who was eitherstillborn or died shortly after birth. In 1313, he was named Justiciarof Ireland, and served as Justiciar until 1315. Theobald claimed thathe and Elizabeth had agreed to marry, presumably after both theirspouses had died.

Undaunted, Theobald de Verdun went to Bristol castle, where, accordingto the Rotuli Parliamentorum, vol. I, p.352-3, in Latin:

Theobald de Verdun was summoned before the king's council because byforce and arms he abducted Elizabeth from Bristol castle... Theobaldmarried her outside the castle without the king's license... Theobaldstated that he was betrothed to Elizabeth in Ireland before he marriedher, and that on Wednesday [February 4] she came one league from saidcastle on his orders and there he married her; he added that he didnot enter the castle and that he did not believe he had done anythingin contempt of the lord king.

Interestingly, one of the two men who brought Theobald before theking's council (the other being Bartholomew de Badlesmere) was RogerMortimer of Chirk, the uncle of his late wife.

Theobald died suddenly on July 27, 1316, at Alton Castle. He andElizabeth had been married only six months. Frances Ann Underhill, inher biography of Elizabeth de Burgh, For Her Good Estate (1999)suggests that he may have been killed by a typhoid outbreak. Almostexactly nine months later, on March 21, 1317, Elizabeth gave birth toa daughter, Isabella de Verdun. She was presumably named after hergodmother, Queen Isabella.

After Theobald's death, Edward II made his English lands ward of hisown favorite, Roger Damory, while his Irish lands went to Theobald'sbrothers. In August 1316, the king granted Joan de Verdun's marriageto William Montague, and she presumably left her stepmother's care atthat time to live in the Montague household in preparation for hermarriage to William Montague's son, John. There are records of theother two stepdaughters, Elizabeth and Margery, visiting theirstepmother later in life as married women.

Theobald de Verdun was Lord Verdun.1

Theobald de Verdun married Elizabeth de Clare, daughter of Gilbert de Clare and Joan of Acre (?); no male heirs.1
Theobald de Verdun was Baron of Alton in 1308.2
Isabel de Verdun , daughter of Theobald de Verdun and Elizabeth de Clare, was born between March 21, 1316 and 1317 at Amesbury, Wiltshire, England.2
Theobald de Verdun died on July 27, 1316.
