Robert Dowling Robert Dowling was born in VA about 1730. The name of his first wifeis unknown. Grandson Dempsey Dowling did remember that she was of VAbirth. They had one son, William and his mother died in childbirth.

In 1754, Robert married a second time to Sarah Guinn. By 1773,something caused Robert and his family to leave VA. That is the datein SC that King George II's deputy-surveyor, John Bremar, Esquire,'Admeasured and laid out unto Robert Dowling a plantation or tract ofland containing 300 acres. It is on Boggy Gully, bounding on allsides on vacant land and hath such shape and marks as the above platrepresents.'

Robert's tract was cut through the middle by Bobby Gully branch, astream that can be seen on present-day Darlington Co SC maps. It isnot known where Robert and Sarah's home stood. Dempsey stated thathis grandfather's home was on Jeffires Creek, a larger stream twomiles east of Boggy Gully. By 1900 the site of Robert's old loghouseor that of one of his son's was faintly visible.

Robert's move to SC was five years after the first Methodist churchwas founded in America. His daughter-in-law is known to have joined aMethodist Church twenty-six years after this. With all the Dowlingemigrants from Ireland being Catholic, one wonders when and how Robertor his forebear was converted to Methodism. Did Bishop Francis Asburyaccomplish the task? If so, the job was done well, for three of thegrandsons became Methodist preachers.

Robert had no use of strong drink. The year after he arrived in SC,court records of the district in which he lived mention his complaintto the Grand Jury of a Joseph Gourly's drunkenness.

Shortly after the call to arms by America's revolutionists, Robertbecame a soldier. He chose to fight with the men of his home state.By May of 1777 he was enrolled as a private with Captain WiliamVause's Company of the 12th Virginia Regiment. Records of the sameunit several months later showed his name (Robert Doling) on theinvalid list with eight and 24/72nds dollars of pay due him.

Later he was with the 6th Regiment of the NC Continental Infantry withCaptain White's outfit. He fought at Musgrove's Mill, GuilfordCourthouse, and in two battles that historians mention as America'smightiest blows for freedom: the Battle of the Cowpens and the Battleof King's Mountain. Pay voucher number 1563 in NC records (Vol 16page 1042) shows that Robert's pay for eight years of military servicewas a total of $186.

1790 St Thomas Township, Cheraw's Dist, SC: Robert Dowling, males 2>21, 0 <21, females ?. The number of females has been written overand the number cannot be determined. It could be 3.

In America's first census of 1790, Robert was still a backwoodsfarmer. He owned no slaves. The four youngsters living with him andSarah were most likely those of his martyred son William. Nearby werethe pioneer families of Saoni Boutwell and John Stokes, families whosedescendants would later marry Robert's offspring. Sons James and Johnstill lived, with over a score of grandchildren.

Robert's last testament, is on record in the courthouse of DarlingtonCo SC.      Wesley Dowling was blacksmith. He 1850 Dale Co AL p 184 The year after Westley's two sons were killed,he was involved in an incident of such import that its story wasrepeated in 'The Montgomery Advertiser'. He was approaching theChoctawhatchee River bridge new Newton, AL on 3 Dec 1864, when henoticed a half-dozen men of Captain Breare's confederate Home-Guardganged around a helpless-looking Dale Countian, named Bill Sketo. They were preparing to hang the man, on the charge that he haddeserted the Rebels' front-lines. (Sketo had come home, because ofhis wife' serious illness, but had followed an often-used procedure byhaving a friend take his place) Dowling warned the self-appointedprosecutors that such a lynching was not right, whereupon they warnedhim that he ' would get the same medecine' if he interfered. Then asSketo stood on the buggy, the rope tightening around his neck, heprayed: 'Forgive them; forgive them, dear Loard!' Such a display ofChristianity by this forlorn foreigner (he was of Spanish birth andprior to the war had preached around Newton) angered the 'judge andjury' so much, they could stand it no more. They belted the red horsehitched to the buggy and Sketo's body went craching downward. But thevictim was tall; his feet were dragging the ground under the post oaktree. Immediately guardsman G___ E___, a cripple, grabbed his crutchand scratched dirt from under the gasping man's feet. And for yearsand years, even on into the twentieth century, that hole remainedhollowed out enen though persistent attempts were made to fill it.One by one the six hangmen died terrible deaths. One was riding ahorse one still day when suddenly the limb of a post oak tree crasheddown on him, splitting his skull. One was killed by a run-away mule.Still another was killed by lightning. One was found dead in a swamp. Today, even the old hangingtree is gone. But the scar?? It probablyremains. REFERENCE: A Dowling Family of the South.

William Dowling William Dowling, Robert's only son by his first wife (name unknown) isthought by some to have been born as late as 1756. However heprobably married in VA before coming to SC in 1770. His King George'sgrant of SC land is dated 1771 which is two years earlier than hisfather's grant of 1773. William was probably married beforeleaving VA, for wife Rebecca Walker was a native of that state (and adaughter of Nathanial and Marian Walker). The tract of landgranted William in 1771 was sixty acres in size and lay on Flat Creek'in Craven County'. That old county covered over two-thirds of SC; itwas strictly a wilderness with few whites in it, so only menofpioneering instinct dared invade it. Adjoining the farm thatWilliam cleared were the lands of a William Breton and a widow Gibson. Dowling's 'Quit-rent' to the King's collectors in January of 1774 isproof of his residence in today's Darlington county area prior to hissubsequent move. By 1775 William had moved one hundred miles tothe southwest; he had decided to leave unsettled Craven County for themore stable Orangeburg District. The latter was near enough to theSavannah waterway on the southern border of the state that for almosta century a portion of its area had been known as Colleton County. It was at this third known home of William's that history was to letyoung Dowling live his last few years. He had purchased this farmfrom one Thomas Ford. It was on the Little Salkehatchee at CypressPond. This one hundred acre tract lay near present-day Bamber, SC. Hardly had these Dowlings settled on the Little Salkehatchee beforewar broke out with England. Young William responded to the call, though not by joining the 'regulars' as had father Robert. Instead,he joined the most dreaded band of guerillas that warfare had everknown: the backwoods followers of the 'Swampfox', General FrancisMarion. American history books tell of the many times that thesemen existed by eating sweet potatoes meal after meal. It was withthem that William fought in the hopeless defense of Charleston. Andit was England's revocation of the paroles originally granted thesedefeated Colonists after that battle and British insistence thatfrontiersmen be gathered up to fight for the King that is thought byhistorians to be the act that later caused such brilliant fighting bythe Carolinians. William was undoubtedly a 'Shirt-sleeve' patriot. . . one who did not always take time to don his uniform. For hisname is not on the official list of Marion's men. But the enemy hadhis name on a list. before the heatgenerated in this fight whichoftentimes involved neighbor against neighbor had died away in the1780's, he was caught at home by a bunch of Tories and shot dead onthe spot. Dowling's twelve-year old son, Jabez, looked on helplesslyas the muskets boomed. The war was over but only the leaders hadsigned the peace treaty. REFERENCE: A Dowling Family of the South.
