New Hanover Precinct NC was renamed as New Hanover Co in 1729.
John Fowler , son of Daniel Fowler and Mary Jane Rollins, was born in 1739.
John Fowler , son of Daniel Fowler and Mary Jane Rollins, was born in 1747 at New Hanover Co, North Carolina. Many sources list his birth as Duplin Co. Best estimates of his birth are 1747. So he was probably born in the part of New Hanover Co that became Duplin Co in 1749.1,2,3,4 John Fowler 1741 John Fowler was listed as 99 years old. (born 1741) (1842 AL Census of Pensioners)
1747 John Fowler Sr. was born in present-day Sampson Co NC. [063] He was the son of Daniel (RS) Fowler.[063]
REFERENCE NOTE: Most references give his place of birth as Sampson(formerly Duplin) Co NC. Duplin was created in 1749 from New HanoverCo. Sampson Co was created in 1784 from Duplin Co. Therefore he was probably born in New Hanover Co NC in the part that later becameDuplin Co and later Sampson Co NC.

John Fowler enlisted for the Revolutionary War three times. [063] Heenlisted as a private for six months (having received a bounty ofthree dollars, and a par of boots) at Matthews Old Field in the countyof Sampson where he was a resident. [255] During this first tour ofduty he was a Minuteman serving under the command of Col James Kenanat the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge near Wilmington NC on 27 Feb1776. His enlistment ran out shortly afterwards.[063][255] Hereceived a discharge from Capt Clinton which he delivered to JeremiahVereen in order to receive his pay for him.
After a few months, the second enlistment was for 12 months in theFirst Regiment of the NC Continental Line under command of Col AlfredMoore. That outfit marched from Wilmington NC to Charleston SC andback.[063][255] He was discharged and received a blank writtendischarge which he afterwards gave to Jeremiah Vereen of SC in orderto get his pay. He never received any pay [255]
He allowed about a year to elapse before volunteering again as aprivate around the spring of 1778 for the Sampson Co Militia. It wascommanded by Capt William Vann, with John Matthews as Lieutenant. The company was stationed at Holly Shelter (in the present day PenderCo) until overwhelmed by a superior British force and ordered todisperse and return home, throwing their ammunition in the river alongthe way.[063] [255] John had no documentation of this service [ 255]
It is at this point in Oct 1779 that the first land record in his nameappears. He deeds land in the Crane Creek area originally patented byhis father whom he names as Daniel to a Richard Fowler whom all thecontextual evidence points to a brother. The land is described ascontiguous to Daniel Fowler's line, but whether this is the father orbrother is not clear. It is noteworthy that he is described in theinstrument as a 'Planter', a term also applied to his father inearlier deeds. There was evidently need to distinguish him from oneor more other John Fowlers. This was his land Sampson Cotransaction.[063][255] This instrument also refers to Daniel Fowleras 'his father'. [255]
1785 Lancaster District SC formed from Camden District.
1790 NC census: there are 2 John Fowlers, one in Sampson Co and one inMecklenburg Co.
1790 SC census: there is John Fowler in Prince Georges Township,Georgetown Co SC where many of his children are listed as being born.John Fowler- males 1 <16, 1 >16; females 4; slaves 0.
It appears that Hannah Sutton died sometime about 1790, theapproximate birthdate of her last child, and before 1802, the birthdate of Amelia Ann 'Millie Ann', daughter of John Fowler and wife,Elizabeth. [255]
In the mid-1790s, John and Elizabeth moved to Lancaster Co SC and andtheir youngest child was born there.[063] They lived there about 20years. [255] NOTE: Some differences as to whether he lived inLancaster or Georgetown Counties or both.
On 29 Nov 1797, John Caston of Lancaster Co SC sold John Fowler 100acres on Camp Creek. [063]
The family is listed on the 1800 census of Lancaster District SC:John Fowler - males 1<10 (1790-1800), 1 10-15(1785-1790), 1>45 (bef1755); females 2<10 (1790-1800), 3 10-15 (1785-1790), 1 16-25(1775-1784), 1>45 (bef 1755); slaves 0.

Columbus Co NC was formed from Bladen and Brunswick Counties in 1808.
1810 SC census: There are 8 John Fowlers listed for 1810 SC. Nonelive in Lancaster Co/Dist. The census does not provide enough agebrackets to help determine if any of these 8 are John Fowler Sr whoseage would be about 69. The bracket is >45.
1810 NC census: There are 2 J Fowlers listed for Columbus Co NC. Onehas no males, the oldest male in the other family is 16-25. Soneither of these would be John Fowler Sr.
From 1816 until 1821, John acquired 1,790 acres in the Beaverdam areaof present day Williams Township, and all part of the 1794 9600 acregrant to John Gray Blount. [255]
Elizabeth reportedly died about 1815. [063]
1820 Columbus Co NC census: John Fowler - 1 male >45; 1 female > 45(no children). If Elizabeth Rackley has actually died, this could behis 3rd wife, Elizabeth Unknown.
1830 Columbus Co NC census: John Fowler - males 2<5 (1825-1830), 210-15 (1815-1820), 1 80-90 (1740-1750); females 1 5-10 (1825-1830), 130-40 (1790-1800). Based on the ages of the children and wife, thiscould be a daughter or daughter-in-law or a new wife. If this is anew wife, some of the children were probably hers due to a previousmarriage. There was no mention of a wife two years later in his 1832pension papers.
1830 Pike Co AL census: John Fowler - males 2<5, 2 10-15, 1 50-60(1770-1780); females 2 5-10, 1 40-50 (1780-1790) Too young to be John(RS) Fowler Sr
John applied for his Revolutionary War pension as a resident fromColumbus Co NC on Nov 12 1832 at age 85 (1747). No family ismentioned in his pension papers.[063] Luke R Simmons and Josephsigned an affidavit stating that John Fowler was 85 and that he isknown in his neighborhood as a Soldier of the Revolution. Otherwitnesses were Edward Wilson, Duncan Sykes, Elisha Sellers, JohnMills, Joshua Henson, and John Wilson. [255] Charles Hay and EzekialHawes also appeared and affirmed that they had served with John Fowlerfor three months. [255]
The certificate of pension, issued on Mar 8 1833, was sent to HonJames J McKay, Democrate of Bladen, who represented se NC in the USHouse of Representatives for 7 terms. It indicated a pension of $30per annum to commence on Mar 4 1831.
In the fall of 1837, John moved to Pike Co AL to live near hischildren. [063] On June 30 1845, John Fowler swore before Jesse Lee,JP, that he, a pensioner, was robbed of his certificate of pension andother papers and money in the fall of 1837 while traveling from NorthCarolina to Alabama; that Fowler did not recollect the precise date ornumber of the certificate; that Fowler received $30.00 per annum up toMarch 1837 , and none since leaving Columbus County; that Fowler'sresidence for 'near seven years' had been Pike County, Alabama.

MARRIAGES: John Fowler Sr was married 2 or 3 times based on severalreferences. Since there are no definite birth dates, marriage dates, and death dates for the spouses, it is difficult if not impossible todetermine which children belonged to which wife.

MARRIAGE 1- Hannah Sutton
John Fowler first married Hannah Sutton (b. 1748). They were marriedabout 1765 and they had seven children from 1768 to 1790 [063]:William, Thomas Frazier, James, Beaman, Samual, Hardy, and Martha.

Although their child reportedly was born in Bladen Co NC. John andElizabeth may have spent some of the early years of their married lifein Sampson Co, where their parents were neighboring property owners.[063]

There could have been 3 marriages: Hannah Sutton abt 1765, ElizabethRackley about 1776, and Elizabeth Fowler abt 1820. Elizabeth Fowleris the daughter of John's brother William P Fowler. THIS IS STILLBEING RESEARCHED.
