Arthur (?) King of Camelot1

M
In folklore, legend, and literature, King Arthur of Camelot, lord of the Kings of the Round Table, is revered above all other kings and queens.
Lengends of King Arthur grew up around the life of a relatively minor 5th-6th century British or Welsh prince who fought against the advancing Saxons and who was the British leader at a famous victory over the Saxons at Mound Badon, c AD 516.
Welsh cleric Nennius wrote about 830 AD that King Arthur fought in at least 12 battles with the Saxons defeating them at Mount Badon in 516 AD but was killed in battle at Camlann in 539 AD.
There are several different theories as to which actual unnamed Britist war leader the legend represents.
In 1348, King Edward III of England founded the knightly Order of the Garter based on Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table who he regarded as historical figures.1

In the 2004 film "King Arthur", Cerdic (?) King of the West Saxons and Cynric were depicted as Saxon invaders, and were killed, respectively, by Arthur (?) King of Camelot and Lancelot at the Battle of Badon Hill.2

Arthur served as King of Camelot between 500 and 539.1

Ceawlin (?) King of Wessex1,2,3

M, b. 547, d. 593
Father*Cynic (?) King of Wessex b. 525, d. 560
Reference1-3
Ceawlin (?) King of Wessex , son of Cynic (?) King of Wessex, was born in 547 at Wessex, England.
Ceawlin (also spelled Ceaulin and Caelin, died ca. 593) was a King of Wessex. He was the son of Cynric of Wessex and the grandson of Cerdic of Wessex. Ceawlin was active during the last years of the Anglo-Saxon invasion, with little of southern England remaining in the control of the native Britons by the time of his death.
The chronology of Ceawlin's life is highly uncertain. The historical accuracy and dating of many of the events in the later Anglo-Saxon Chronicle have been called into question, and his reign is variously listed as lasting seven, seventeen, or thirty-two years. The Chronicle records several battles of Ceawlin's between the years 556 and 592,including the first record of a battle between different groups of Anglo-Saxons, and indicates that under Ceawlin, Wessex acquired significant territory, some of which was later to be lost to other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Ceawlin is also named as one of the eight 'bretwaldas', a title given in the Chronicle to eight rulers who had overlordship over southern Britain, although the extent of Ceawlin's control is not known.
Ceawlin died in 593, having been deposed the year before, possibly by his successor, Ceol. Ceol was Ceawlin's nephew, son of Ceawlin's brother Cutna.
Ceawlin is recorded in various sources as having two sons, Cutha and Cuthwine.
Ceawlin's reign belongs to the period of Anglo-Saxon expansion at the end of the sixth century. Though there are many unanswered questions about the chronology and activities of the early West Saxon rulers, it is clear that Ceawlin was one of the key figures in the final Anglo-Saxon conquest of southern Britain.
The history of the sub-Roman period in Britain is poorly sourced and the subject of a number of important disagreements among historians. It appears, however, that in the fifth century raids on Britain by continental peoples developed into migrations. The newcomers included Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Frisians. These peoples captured territory in the east and south of England, but at about the end of the fifth century, a British victory at the battle of Mons Badonicus halted the Anglo-Saxon advance for fifty years. Near the year 550, however, the British began to lose ground once more, and within twenty-five years, it appears that control of almost all of southern England was in the hands of the invaders.

Cenred (?) Cenred of Wessex was a member of the House of Wessex and a member ofthe direct male line from Cynric to Egbert and probably never served as king. It is possible that Cenred ruled alongside his son Ine for a period. There is weak evidence for joint kingships, and strongerevidence of subkings reigning under a dominant ruler in Wessex, notlong before his time. Ine acknowledges his father's help in his codeof laws, and there is also a surviving land-grant that indicatesCenred was still reigning in Wessex after Ine's accession.

His father was Ceolwald of Wessex. Cenred had at least two otherchildren: Ingild, the great-grandfather of Ealhmund of Kent, and thegreat-great grandfather of Egbert; and Cuthburga, who married Aldfrithof Northumbria, and became abbess of Wimborne. There may also havebeen another daughter who was married to Aethelfrith of Wessex, butthis claim may have been substantiated to further Æthelheard ofWessex's claim to the throne.

Anglo Saxon Invasion

The Roman army had left Britain and travelled south across Europe to defend Rome in the year 409 AD. But they lost the war to the Goths, and never returned.
As the Romans left, the Scotti (from Ireland area) and the Picts (from Scotland area) began to raid across the borders. Lacking Roman defenders, Britons solicited Germanic troops from three very powerful Germanic tribes: the Saxons from Germany, the Angles from northern Netherlands, and the Jutes from Denmark.

Elesa's son, Cerdic, heard from other Saxons who had been to Britain how good that land was, and how weak the Britons had become since the departure of their Roman Legions. Cerdic was not invited to Britain, as had been the first Saxons, but he decided to take his people from the bog lands of Jutland (Denmark) where they lived, to the good new land of Britain. And so, the Angles and Saxons invaded Britain, landing at Portsmouth and settling inland from there, by force of arms. Leading them all, was Cerdic.

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Cerdic landed in Hampshire in 495 with his son Cynric in three keels (ships). He is said to have fought a British king named Natanleod at Netley Marsh in Hampshire and killed him thirteen years later (in 508) and to have fought at Cerdicesleag (Charford, Cerdic's Ford) in 519, after which he became the first King of Wessex. The conquest of the Isle of Wight is also mentioned among his campaigns, and it was later given to his kinsmen, Stuf and Wihtgar (who had supposedly arrived with the West Saxons in 514). Cerdic is said to have died in 534 and was succeeded by his son Cynric.

The early history of Wessex is clearly muddled and duplicate reports of events exists. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, was put together in the late ninth century; though it probably does record the extant tradition of the founding of Wessex, the intervening four hundred years mean that the account cannot be assumed to be accurate.

Descent from Cerdic became a necessary criterion for later kings of Wessex, and Egbert of Wessex, progenitor of the English royal house and subsequent rulers of England and Britain, claimed him as an ancestor.

Everything they did was memorized and told to their childrens' children. When they learned to write, all the stories were committed to paper manuscripts, and so preserved for one and a half thousand years until today, in books called the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles.

While most of Europe emerged from the post Roman world speaking Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, and French derived from the Latin of the bygone Romans), the language that would define England was Germanic due to the Anglo-Saxon influence.
In the 2004 film "King Arthur", Cerdic (?) King of the West Saxons and Cynric were depicted as Saxon invaders, and were killed, respectively, by Arthur (?) King of Camelot and Lancelot at the Battle of Badon Hill.

Cerdic's ancestors

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle provides a pedigree tracing Cerdic's ancestry back to Woden who lived in the second century AD and the antediluvian patriarchs. However, Kenneth Sisam has shown that this pedigree resulted from a process of elaboration upon a root pedigree borrowed from the kings of Bernicia, and hence prior to Cerdic himself it has no historical basis.      Charlemagne (?) King of France, Holy Roman Emperor , son of Pepin (?) III, the Short, 1st King of Franks and Berthe (Bertree) of Laon (?), was born on April 2, 747.1
Charlemagne (English: Charles the Great, Dutch: Karel de Grote, German: Karl der Grosse, Latin: Carolus Magnus) was born on April 2, 742 in Northern Europe. Charles was the eldest son of Pippin III and Bertrada of Laon. ‘By the sword and the cross,’ Charlemagne became master of Western Europe.

In 768, when Charlemagne was 26, he and his younger brother Carloman inherited the kingdom of the Franks. In 771 Carloman died, and Charlemagne became sole ruler of the kingdom. At that time the Franks were falling back into barbarian ways, neglecting their education and religion. The Saxons of northern Europe were still pagans. In the south, the Roman Catholic church was asserting its power to recover land confiscated by the Lombard kingdom of Italy. Europe was in turmoil.

Charlemagne was determined to strengthen his realm and to bring order to Europe. In 772 he launched a 30-year military campaign to accomplish this objective. By 800 Charlemagne was the undisputed ruler of Western Europe. His vast realm encompassed what are now France, Switzerland, Belgium, and The Netherlands. It included half of present-day Italy and Germany, and parts of Austria and Spain. By establishing a central government over Western Europe, Charlemagne restored much of the unity of the old Roman Empire and paved the way for the development of modern Europe.

On Christmas Day in 800, while Charlemagne knelt in prayer in Saint Peter’s in Rome, Pope Leo III placed a golden crown on the bowed head of the king. Charlemagne is said to have been surprised by the coronation, declaring that he would not have come into the church had he known the pope’s plan. However, some historians say the pope would not have dared to act without Charlemagne's knowledge.

Charlemagne learned to read Latin and some Greek but apparently did not master writing. At meals, instead of having jesters perform, he listened to visiting scholars read from learned works. Charlemagne believed that government should be for the benefit of the governed. He was a reformer who tried to improve his subject’s lives. He set up money standards to encourage commerce and urged better farming methods.
‘By the sword and the cross,’ Charlemagne became master of Western Europe.
As is often the case, people considered great by historians are great killers as well. Throughout his conquests, Charlemagne was responsible for the death of masses of people who refused to accept Christianity, or their new king. Choosing to keep faith with their old gods and leaders, many thousands were slaughtered.
