CSA UNIT HISTORY: Co K (from Barbour Co AL), 29th Alabama InfantryRegiment
The 29th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Pensacola inFebruary, 1862, by the addition of two companies to the Fourth AlabamaBattalion - a body of eight companies, which had been organized theautumn before at Montgomery. The regiment, recruited from Barbour,Bibb, Blount, Conecuh, Montgomery, Russell, Shelby, and Talladegacounties, remained at Pensacola until it was evacuated, suffering muchfrom diseases that usually afflict raw troops. It then lay betweenPollard and Pensacola for over a year, when it was ordered to Mobile. The regiment was there from July 1863 to April 1864, except for ashort time that it was at Pollard. The regiment joined the Army ofTennessee at Resaca with over 1,000 men, in time to initiate theAtlanta-Dalton campaign. It was brigaded with the 1st, 17th, and 26thAlabama, and 37th Mississippi regiments, commanded at differentintervals by Col. Murphey of Montgomery, Gen'l O'Neal of Lauderdale, and Gen'l Shelley of Talladega. The 29th was engaged at the Battle ofResaca with a loss of about 100 k and w, out of 1100 men engaged. AtNew Hope Church, the loss was very heavy, and at PeachTree Creek, theregiment was cut to pieces. On 28 July, near Atlanta, half of theregiment was killed and wounded in the fierce and protracted assaulton the enemy's line. The 29th then moved into Tennessee with Gen'lJohn BellHood and lost very heavily in casualties at Franklin, andlargely in casualties and prisoners at Nashville. A remnant of itmoved into the Carolinas where it was engaged at Kinston andBentonville with considerable loss. It was consolidated with the 1stand 17th Regiments early in 1865, and fewer than 90 men surrendered atDurham Station, Orange County, NC on 26 April 1865.
Field and Staff Officers: Cols. Jonathan R. F Tatnall (GA; transferredto the navy); John F. Conoley (Dallas); Lt. Cols. J. F.      Benjamin Franklin Ketchum , son of Bartley W. Ketchum and Martha Arlina Brackin, was born on August 2, 1870 at Orange Hill, Washington Co, Florida. In the 1880 census for Coryell Co TX, his birth state is listed as AL and Bartley is listed as his father. In his death certificate, it is stated that his father was unknown and his mother's maiden was Brackin. Bartley's wife in 1880 was listed as Martha. Based on several family trees on ancestry.com, there is disagreement as to the identity of this Martha Brackin. Some say that she is the daughter of Mathias Brackin and Frances Dowling but I haven't been able to document that other than in family trees. Marriage records for Dale Co prior to 1870 no longer exist.1,2,3

Cloe Matilda Ketchum1,2,3

F, b. 1840
Father*David Ketchum b. 1793, d. 1854
Mother*Mary Ann Walker b. c 1810, d. a 1860
Cloe Matilda Ketchum Cloe Matilda Ketchum first appears in the 1850 Barbour Co AL censusat age 10 where she is living with her parents David and Mary L.Ketchum and listed as Matilda C. Her sister Ann E., age 25, is also living with the family as is her brother LaFayette age 12 and otherfamily members.
Her brother, Bartley W. Ketchum, 26, has already married Sarah Casey, age 28, daughter of James Calvin Casey Sr. The two families are notliving close together.
In her father's 1854 Barbour Co AL will, she is listed as CloeMatilda, wife of Henry Casey. Therefore she married Henry Caseybetween the 1850 census and Nov 1854. Her sister Ann Eliza is notmarried. One Henry Casey was the son of Lemuel, grandson of James Sr. He is of the right age but left for Texas and married his cousinDelilah Cox by 1857. Another Henry Casey bought land from thegovernment in 1858. This could be the husband of Delilah. This Henrywas possibly the son of Lemuel Casy, brother of James Sr.
Next door to the Bartley W. Ketchum family in the 1860 Barbour Co ALcensus, are other members of Bartley's family living together.Lafayette Ketchum 23 is listed as head of the household. His motherMargaret 55 is stillliving. Also listed are Annie Casey 37, MatildaCasey 20, Benjamin F. Casey 18, and Huey Casey 4.
There is at least one known mistake with the above 1860 census record. Benjamin F. Casey is actually Benjamin F. Ketchum who later marriedNancy E. K. Phillips. This is the only reference that Annie (AnnEliza) Ketchum married a Casey. If she did, it was between herfather's Nov 1854 will and 1860. There is no record of such amarriage in the Barbour Co marriage records.
It is assumed that Huey is the son of Henry Casey and Cloe MatildaKetchum since he is listed as 18 and living with Matilda Casey in the1870 Barbour Co AL census in Louisville. However also living withMatilda Casey is Penelope Casey age 8.
This presents a puzzle. Who is Penelope? If she is the daughter ofMatilda, who is the father? No further record of Matilda Casey hasbeen found beyond the 1870 census. Her married name was Casey.
