The last record we have of theRackleys in colonial VA is the sale to Charles Leath of 200 acres onthe Nottaway River and Indian Swamp in Surry (present-day Sussex) Coby Anthony Ratleif, who used as his mark the large underlined capitalA. Anthony Rackley in NC later used the same mark. The land Anthonysold in 1741 had been obtained by grant in1740. Landmarks indicatethat it is situated in the southwestern corner of present-day SurryCo. Anthony's involvement with the Leaths suggest a familyrelationship.
While Anthony was in Surry/Sussex Co from 1737 to 1741, his son Johnpushed southward into a part of Bertie Co NC.
On 10 Apr 1749, Anthony Rackley and his son John bought land on FoxCreek in Granville (now Franklin Co) Co NC from William Sims. On 30Apr 1753, John (Anthony's son) received a grant from Earl Granvillefor 560 acres on Buffalo Creek in present-day Franklin. The land wassurveyed on 20 Oct 1751. A sworn chain bearer was supposed to be atleast 21 years of age and someone other than the grant applicant.John sold land from his grant to Saul and Person Rackley in 1755.Thus the brothers John and Anthony and their rapidly maturingfamilies, settled near the Tar River in Franklin, just a few mileseast of the place where Louisburg was authorized to be laid out as thecounty seat in 1779.

Anthony Rackley , son of John Rackley II and Jane Mills, was born circa 1700 at Essex Co, Virginia.
Anthony Rackley died after 1765. Duplin Co, NC, probably.

Edward Rackley In the early days of the Colony of Virginia, death from natural causes and Indian raids seemed to claim the colonists as fast as new settlers arrived. To encourage people to come to the New World, a policy of headrights was adopted. Fifty acres of land would be given to each person who paid the cost of transport for himself or for any other person. Headright records indicate that Edward Ratcliffe camefrom England to Virginia in or before 1639. In 1641 Richard Preston received 250 acres for the transport of five servants, including 'Edward Ratcliffe'. Both citations appear to be misspellings of the Rackley surname, which also appears in Virginia records as Ratlief,Ratleiff, Ratliffe, Rackly, Racle, Racly, Ratly, and Rattle. Names were spelled as they sounded in those days. There is no documentationas to the identity of the other four 'servants' who came over with Edward nor any documentation as to why they came. Richard Rackley also arrived in 1639 and nearly 40 years later, about 1676, William Rackley settled in New England, having come over as boatswain on a ship out of Bristol. No relationship is known between Richard,William, and our Edward. Edward Rackley probably remained in the service of Richard Preston for the customary period of seven years.Once on his own, Edward seems to have prospered. In 1657, he obtained the aforementioned 400 acres of land in present-day Essex County, VA.The site 12 miles above Nansemond Towne is approximately half way between the modern towns of Tappahannock and Port Royal. On 21April 1657, Edward Rackley patented 400 acres of land on the southside of the Rappahannock River, behind land of John Gilliot, about 12 miles above Nansemond Towns. He obtained that land through headrights, by having paid the passage to the Colony of Virginia for eight new settlers. The date of Edward's patent is only 50 years after the founding of the colony. In 1658 Edward and his Essex County neighbor Peter Ford patented 640 acres in New Kent County, VA by headrights. In 1663 they acquired another 640 acres in New Kent, also by headrights. There are presently no known records documenting the disposition of the New Kent land. This 1663 record is the last known record of Edward Rackley.
John Rackley I , son of Edward Rackley, was born circa 1650 at Essex Co, Virginia.
Edward Rackley died circa 1663 at Essex Co, Virginia.

Elizabeth Rackley married John Fowler, son of Daniel Fowler and Mary Jane Rollins, circa 1776 at North Carolina. They had no children until 1783. Perhaps the delay was caused by John's 3 tours of duty during the Revolution.5

Franklin Co NC was formed in 1779 from the southern portion of Butte Co. Named after Bemjamin Franklin.
Sarah Margaret Fowler , daughter of John Fowler and Elizabeth Rackley, was born on July 21, 1783 at Bladen Co, North Carolina.5
Although their eldest child reportedly was born in Bladen Co NC. John and Elizabeth may have spent some of the early parts of their married life in Sampson Co, where their parents were neighboring property owners.

In the mid-1790's, John and Elizabeth moved to Lancaster Co SC and their youngest child was born there. They sold their property in SC in 1804 and moved back to NC in the area that became Columbus Co in1808.[063]
Elizabeth is named in the records of her father's estate sale, which was held in Duplin Co NC in 1813. However neither she nor her husband signed the document, apparently because they were at the time living about 90 miles away in the Williams Township of Columbus.5
Mary Ann 'Annie' Fowler , daughter of John Fowler and Elizabeth Rackley, was born circa 1785.

Charlotte Fowler , daughter of John Fowler and Elizabeth Rackley, was born in 1796 at North Carolina.
Caroline Fowler , daughter of John Fowler and Elizabeth Rackley, was born in 1799.
     Elizabeth was the wife of John Fowler in the 1800 census for Lancaster District, South Carolina: John Fowler: males 1<10, 1 10-15, 1 >45 (John); females 2<10 (1791-1800), 3 10-15 (1785-1790), 1 16-25 (1775-1784 Sarah) , 1 >45 (bef 1755).7
Amelia Ann 'Milly' Fowler , daughter of John Fowler and Elizabeth Rackley, was born in 1802 at Lancaster District, South Carolina.8,5
Elizabeth reportedly died about 1815 when about 60 years old. No wife is mentioned in John Fowler's pension papers of 1832.5

Elizabeth Rackley, the husband of Elizabeth Rackley, died at Columbus, Polk Co, North Carolina.4

John Rackley II The only documented child of John Rackley I and Martha North is JohnRackley II who probably was born about 1670. John I died intestate inEssex County VA apparently in 1698. In March of 1711/1712, JohnRackley II of South Farnham Parish, Essex County, purchased fromRichard Long 200 acres in St. Marys Parish, Essex County, VA, adjacentto the land of Samuel Ellit. The next day John sold to Richard Long400 acres in St. Marys Parish, 'about 12 miles above Nazemond Town' onthe south side of the Rappahannock behind the land of John Gillett. The latter transaction was recorded 10 Apr 1712. On 26 Apr 1712,Augustine Smith was granted those same 400 acres 'Granted EdwardRackley, dec'd, 21 Apr 1657, & renewed 18 Mar 1662; lying behind landof John Gillcott, aboute 12 mi. above Nansemond Town; beg. on the N.side of the main run into the head of Moone's Cr; which land wasclaimed by John Rackley, his son, who also failed to palnt &c.'Whether Mr. Long or Mr. Smith actually gained possession of the land,we do not know; however documents involving this single tract landclearly indicate that Edward was the father of John (I) who also had ason named John (II). In June 1713 John Rackley II of the Parish ofSouth Farnham in the county of Essex within the colony of Virginia son& heir apparent of John Rackley late of the aforesaid parish Countyand Colony Dec'd sold William Grinall, planter, a plantation of 180acres 'given to my father John Rackley Dec'd by a certain will ofAnthony North dec'd dated 23 August 1684'. The plantation was on thesouth side of Rappahannock River about 2 miles above Hobs His Hole, which is at the present-day town of Tappahannock. The sale to WilliamGrinall, now John's stepfather, is a release of John Rackley's rightto a share of the family property. Apparently John Rackley II,his wife Jane, and their children moved to Henrico Co VA in or about1713. On 4 Oct 1728, John Rackley II, along with William Kennon andJames McMillan, witnessed the will of Leonary Dyson. John Sr (II) andJohn Jr. (III) paid taxes in Henrico Co in 1736. John Sr paid twolevies, the second one apparently for his son Anthony. In the Apr1738 Court Session in Henrico Co VA, Jane Ratly was appointedexecutrix of the estate of John Ratley with William Kennon Jr assecurity. That indicates John Rackley II died in early 1738 andsuggests family ties with the Kennons. John's estate papers are thelast record we have of the Rackleys in Henrico Co.

Joshua Rackley Joshua Rackley was the son of Anthony Rackley.
In 1745 John Rackley III received a Granville Grant for land on Buffalo Creek in present-day Franklin Co NC. On 10 Apr 1749, Anthony and his son John purchased a tract of land on Fox Creek in Granville (present-day Franklin) County. Thus John III, his father, JohnII, Anthony, and uncle John III, and their rapidly maturing families settled near the Tar River a short distance downstream from present-day Louisburg, which was authorized to be laid out as the county seat in 1779.
Before long Anthony's son Joshua fell in love with his first cousin,Cityvias daughter of John III, and took her as his wife.
In 1758 Anthony and his son John "of Johnston Co and his wife Jane" sold the Fox Creek property to Joshua.
In Feb 1760 Joshua and Cityvias sold their plantation and followed his father and brother to Duplin Co NC. Although there were several spellings of Joshua's wife's name, she could write her own name and she spelled it 'Cityvias'.
Joshua and Citivias settled near his brother John on the west side of Six Runs Creek in a section of Duplin Co that fell into Sampson whenthe county was divided in 1784. All of the Rackleys in Sampson/Duplin at the time of the 1850 census are descendants of Joshua and Citivias.
Joshua appears to have been a prosperous planter. On 8 Sep 1760 he bought 200 acres on the we st side of the Six Runs. Subsequently heacquired five more tracts of land in Sampson Co, the last by a NC Land Grant in 1788.William Robinson and Daniel Fowler witnessed the deed for the Crane Creek purchase of 1771. In 1800, Joshua's household included 10 slaves. His farm lay on the east side of Crane Creek and on both sides of the road south from Clinton toward Wilmington (US421).
In 1801, Joshua sold the homeplace to his youngest son, Frederick. Joshua and Cityvias were living with their son Elijah in Duplin Co at the time of Joshua's death in 1813. He was survived by his wife and eleven grown children, two of whom served in the American Revolution. It is not known when Cityvias died or where she and Joshua are buried.
