On December 27, 1856, Isaac Simmons deeded his daughter Jane several slaves and 120 acres of land. The location is west 1/2 of the NE 1/4, and the south east 1/4 of the north west 1/4 of Section 31, Township nine, Range twenty one. Catherine Ballard Casey, grand daughter of Jane, has a copy of the deed. Isaac apparently signed the deed while Elizabeth made her mark.
On December 27, 1856 at Pike Co, Alabama, Isaac and Elizabeth Simmons 'sold' to each of their children (for love and affection and for $1) parcels of land. Some got 80 acres, others got 120 acres and 3 or 4 slaves. The share of property which was to go to sons Bethel Simmons and Eli Atkinson Simmons, was given instead to their wives with the stipulation that it would belong to the wives for as long as they were married to Bethel and Eli; then it would pass to their heirs who were also bodily heirs of Bethel and Eli. No explanation was made for this action, but they must have felt strongly about it because in each case, they appointed another member of the family to act as trustee to see that their wishes were honored.

Exact location of the farm and the cemetery plot is uncertain except that it was on the west side of the Troy Elba Highway. The road to the cemetery now passes through private property and is not open to the public. I am told that the cemetery is covered with kudzu during the summer and that you have to get permission from the land owner to go there in the winter.

Most family trees on ancestry.com lists the parents of John R Simmons and Luke R Simmons as Luke Russell Sr and Priscilla Soles probably due to having the same name. There is no known documentation that supports this. I have not seen this Luke Simmons referred to as Luke Jr in any documentation. Additionally no documentation has been found to support the suffix Sr for Luke Russell Simmons who married Priscilla Soles. I recently discovered (Dec 2015) a transcription of the family bible of Luke R Simmons and Priscilla Soles in the Troy, Pike Co AL library practically rules out this possibility. Because Luke Jr and John Jr moved together and married sisters, it can be assumed (but not proven) that they were probably brothers. They have been assigned as sons of Unknown Simmons for tracking purposes. It is difficult to determine the timing of the family moves because the birth states of the children vary from census to census.3
