On December 27, 1856 at Pike Co, Alabama, Isaac Simmons and Elizabeth Simmons 'sold' to each of their children (for love and affection and for $1) parcels of land. Some got 80 acres, others got 120 acres and 3 or 4 slaves. The share of property which was to go to sons Bethel Simmons and Eli Atkinson Simmons, was given instead to their wives with the stipulation that it would belong to the wives for as long as they were married to Bethel and Eli; then it would pass to their heirs who were also bodily heirs of Bethel and Eli. No explanation was made for this action, but they must have felt strongly about it because in each case, they appointed another member of the family to act as trustee to see that their wishes were honored.
