Luke Simmons was listed in the household of Daniel Simmons in the 1830 census at Lowndes Co, Alabama: Daniel Simmons: males 1<5 (1826-1830 Daniel ), 1 5-9 ( 1821-1825 Luke), 1 10-14 (1816-1820 John), 1 20-29 (1801-1810 ?), 1 30-39 (1791-1800 Daniel); females 1<5 (1826-1830 Nancy ), 1 10-14 (1816-1820 Kate), 1 30-39 (1791-1800 Elizabeth); slaves 1.      Benjamin Daniel Simmons , son of Luke Simmons, was born on September 30, 1843 at Troy, Pike Co, Alabama. There is some confusion as to his birth year. Sep 30, 1843 was from a family tree on ancestry.com. He is listed as 5 in the 1850 census. His tombstone lists his birth as Sep 30 1839.1

Luke R Simmons1

M, b. Jun 12, 1809, d. 1896
Father*Unknown Simmons b. b 1785
ChartsUnknown Simmons
Luke R Simmons , son of Unknown Simmons, was born on June 12, 1809 at Columbus Co, North Carolina. Birth date varies depending on the source. Find A Grave list Luke Simmons and Priscilla Soles as his parents but this is incorrect.2
Most family trees on ancestry.com lists the parents of John R Simmons and Luke R Simmons as Luke Russell Sr and Priscilla Soles probably due to having the same name. There is no known documentation that supports this. I have not seen this Luke Simmons referred to as Luke Jr in any documentation. Additionally no documentation has been found to support the suffix Sr for Luke Russell Simmons who married Priscilla Soles. I recently discovered (Dec 2015) a transcription of the family bible of Luke R Simmons and Priscilla Soles in the Troy, Pike Co AL library practically rules out this possibility. Because Luke Jr and John Jr moved together and married sisters, it can be assumed (but not proven) that they were probably brothers. They have been assigned as sons of Unknown Simmons for tracking purposes. It is difficult to determine the timing of the family moves because the birth states of the children vary from census to census.3

Sarah Ann Waters married Luke R Simmons, son of Unknown Simmons, before 1830. Probably Clarke Co MS.4,5

Luke Simmons was the head of household in the 1830 census for Washington Co, Alabama: Luke Simmons: males 1 20-29 (1801-1810); females 1 15-19 (1811-1815). Living next to John Simmons.4
Julia Ann Simmons , daughter of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Waters, was born in 1831 at Alabama. Possibly Washington Co.6
John Burrell Simmons , son of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Waters, was born in March, 1833 at Mississippi.7,6
Allen Simmons , son of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Waters, was born in 1836 at Mississippi.
Isaac Simmons , son of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Waters, was born in 1838 at Mississippi.6
     Luke R Summonds was the head of household in the 1840 census for Clarke Co, Mississippi: Luke R Summonds: males 2<5 (1836-1840 Allen, Isaac), 1 5-9 (1831-1835 John B) , 1 30-39 (1801-1810 Luke) ; females 1 5-9 (1831-1835 Julia), 1 15-19 (1821-1825 ?), 1 20-29 (1811-1820 wife). Living in same county as John R.5
Leonard Simmons , son of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Waters, was born in 1840 at Mississippi.6
Sarah Ann Waters, the wife of Luke R Simmons, died circa 1840 probably Clarke Co MS.5,6
Luke Simmons age 32 married Sarah Ann Hammonds on December 14, 1841 at Pike Co, Alabama. According to family trees on ancestry.com, Luke married Sarah Ann Waters before the 1830 census. A Luke Simmons married Sarah Ann Hammonds in Pike Co on Dec 14 1841 according to Pike Co marriage records. The only other Luke Simmons of marrying age in 1841 was the son of Daniel Simmons and Elizabeth Simmons. He was married to a Loryann in 1850. Therefore the children living with Luke in the 1850 census who are older than 9 would be the children of Sarah Waters and the children born after 1841 could be the children of Sarah Ann Hammonds. It is possible that this could be another Luke Simmons.8,9

Malinda Simmons , daughter of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Hammonds, was born in 1845 at Alabama.6
Lina Simmons , daughter of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Hammonds, was born in 1848 at Pike Co, Alabama.2
Martha Simmons , daughter of Luke R Simmons and Sarah Ann Hammonds, was born in 1849 at Alabama.6
Luke Simmons was the head of household in the 1850 Alabama state census in Pike Co: Luke Simmons: males 1<21, 1>21, 1 18-45; females 1>21; 0 slaves. Probable not Luke Russell.10
Luke Simmons was the head of household in the 1850 census for Pike Co, Alabama: Luke Simmons 41 farmer NC, Sarah 35 NC/SC ? can't read/write, Julia 19 AL, John 14 farmer Miss, Allen 14 Miss, Isaac 12 Miss, Leonard 10 Miss, Malinda 5 AL, Lina 4 AL, Martha 1 AL.      Luke R Simmons was the head of household in the 1866 Alabama state census in Coffee Co: Luke Simmons, Schedule 1: males 3 <10, 1 50-60 (1806-1816); females 2 10-20, 1 20-30, 1 50-60 (1806-1816). Living next to Jas (or Jos) B Simmons age 40-50. Haven't been able to locate him in Schedule 3 which would show his township and range.11
On July 12, 1867 at Precinct 4, Coffee Co, Alabama, Luke R Simmons was listed as a registered voter in book 1, page 244.12
Luke R Simmons and his family have not been located in the 1870 census.
Luke R Simmons was the head of household in the 1880 census for Peacocks, Coffee Co, Alabama: L R Simmons 75 MS MS MS farmer, Sarah 65 MS MS MS can't read/write, Julia Ann 48 MS MS MS can't read/write, Emmaline 30 MS MS MS, Peter 21 AL MS MS can't read/write, David 19 AL AL MS can't read/write, William 14 AL MS MS can't read/write, Lucie 6m AL AL MS. There are a lot of problems with this census such as birth states. Did Sarah really have Lucie at age 65 or is she a granddaughter?13

Luke died in 1896 at Coffee Co, Alabama. Some family trees list his death as Geneva Co AL/.2,7 He was buried in Haney Cemetery, Coffee Co, Alabama. His Find A Grave Memorial # is 125962016. There is no photo on Find-A-Grave. So I don't know if this is just a guess or a fact..7
