Humphrey lived at Grafton at Herefordshire, England.1
Richard Stafford , son of Humphrey Stafford and Eleanor Aylesbury, was born.
Humphrey Stafford , son of Humphrey Stafford and Elizabeth Burdet, was born in 1400.1,4

Humphrey Stafford married Eleanor Aylesbury, daughter of Thomas Aylesbury Knight of Blatherwyck and Katherine Pabenham, on January 22, 1423; Her maritagium included the manor of Blatherwycke, Northamptonshire.1,4
Humphrey Stafford , son of Humphrey Stafford and Eleanor Aylesbury, was born circa 1426.1
Elizabeth Stafford , daughter of Humphrey Stafford and Eleanor Aylesbury, was born in 1435 at Beauchamp Court, Worcestershire, England.5
In June, 1448, Humphrey and son Richard were assaulted at Coventry, Warwickshire, by Robert Harcourt, Knt, resulting in Richard's death. This initiated a continuing feud with the Harcourts, which resulted in the Staffords raiding Stanton Harcourt in May 1450, burining house and church, and driving the Harcouts into the church tower.2
In 1450 Humphrey Stafford and his brother John (The Archbishop) lead an army against the Kentish rebellion from Jack Cade, his complaint being that 'the system of tax collection was unjust and extortive'.The rising was in no sense revoulutionary, but a demand for a reform of the existing order. The King replied two days later by commanding the gathering to disperse. It did not, and so the King marched his army through London to give battle to the rebels, but found their camp at Blackheath deserted. Cade had moved on towards Sevenoaks, and where the road ran narrow prepared an ambush. Once the royal army was caught in the bottleneck the rebels fired their arrows ,followed by a fierce charge in which both Sir Humphrey Stafford and his brother were killed. The King panicked and left the city undefended , Cade saw an oportunity to invade the abandoned city and marched back to Blackheath.

NOTE: Humphrey and his brother are mentioned in Shakespeare's Henry VI.2
Humphrey Stafford, the husband of Eleanor Aylesbury, died on June 7, 1450 at Sevenoaks, Kent, England.1

In 1728, John Stansell also witnessed the deed six days later when Edmund sold the land to his(Edmund's) cousin's husband, Nathaniel Ming, for only five shillings.
It is a known fact that there were many conveyances of land in the early days without the deed being recorded. The custom was that some educated person in the area, usually the Justice of the Peace, would write the deed, or the person involved would write it, using an old one for a guide. Getting it to the county seat in those times required days as compared to minutes or hours now. We can therefore understand the neglect of these people in not recording their deeds.Prior to the time that Martin county was established in 1774,Stancill would have been required to travel 100 miles round trip to visit the county seat. Their neglect in recording deeds makes it difficult on present day genealogists.3
In 1728, William Charlton sold Edmond Smithwick Sr. an unknown number ofacres.. Witnesses: John Stansell.

There are two main sources of information for the early members of this family in America. Both are in the North Carolina State Archives. As noticed by the titles, there is no common agreement as to the correct/preferred spelling of the surname.

The Stancill Family, 1662 to 1981 (always spells the name as Stancill)

The Stansel Family (spells the name as it appears in official records.)1,2
New Kent Co VA was formed in 1654 from York Co.
John Stansel Sr. whose parents are unknown was born circa 1662 at Qutirent (now Suffolk), England.3 He is also listed as being born circa 1670 at England.1
The first Stancill of whom we have knowledge was born in England about 1662.
His name was John Stancill and he migrated to Nansemond County VA which adjoins the James River on the south side, just after passing through the Hampton Roads area. Suffolk is the county seat of Nansemond.
The first written record of the presence in the New World is contained in the Virginia Magazine of History, Vol 29, page 406. It is recorded there that John Stancill pad quit rent on 500 acres of land in 1704.
John Stancill married Katherine, daughter of John Hardy. They apparently left Virginia and came down to North Carolina. Katherine died in Chowan Co NC in 1719.
John and Katerine produced three sons, William, John Jr., and Peter.
