Green Beauchamp was _ Type: GENERAL NOTES.3,4 He Green Beauchamp, son of Littleton (RS) BEAUCHAMP and Nancy HamptonRyan, was born in Baldwin Co GA about 1803.
In 1818 at age about 17, he and his brother, William BEAUCHAMP,entered the area of Henry Co AL from Fort Gaines, GA, by crossing theriver in a flat boat. Green later said that there were 'not a hundredwhite people in the whole territory of Henry' at that time as thefirst settlers had just begun arriving two years earlier in 1816. [099vol II]
The territory embraced 'all that tract of country lying east of therange line between 13 and 14, south and east of the county of Butler, south on Montgomery County, west of the Indian boundary line and theChattahoochee, and north of the 31 deg of north latitude.' Thecounty was very large comprising what later became, Barbour, Coffee,Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, and parts of Pike andCrenshaw Counties. This means that the huge Wiregrass area was very, very sparcely settled. There was not much that could be done in theway of government at this time for most of the area was unsettled.[099 vol II] [263]
Many of the first settlers came for the purpose of trading and as aresult of these trades, bought much of the most productive lands foralmost nothing. Old Franklin was Henry County's first settlementsufficiently large enough to be called a town. It was located on thewest bank of the Chattahoochee River just across from Fort Gaines, GA,and at the point where settlers made their crossing. It was in thistype of country that Green set up a store in Franklin near theChattahoochee River in 1818 and began trading with the Indians, andthe few white settlers immediately moved west of the river. [099 volII]
Major settlements were made in the northeastern part of the county, and further south along the Chattahoochee River. Green and Williamwere some of the early merchants in Franklin. Green was the firstcircuit court clerk in Henry Co AL [099 vol II].
Green and brother William soon moved further into the interior to aplace some 30 miles to the northwest of Franklin later to becomeWilliamston and the second town established in Henry Co. TheWilliamston settlement was established as such in 1820. Travel was aproblem, and Indian trails had to be cleared and widened so that cartsand wagons might pass. The first trail that had been sufficientlywidened to be called a road, was cut from Old Franklin to Williamstonto Louisville. [099 vol II]
It was two or three years after the first towns weresettled(1820-1821) before the lands were surveyed. When a man cameinto the territory he would select his claim, stake it out, and beginto work. Settlers seldom, if ever, interferred with other claims, andthings remained peaceable. It was quite common, however , for asettler who knew the territory to sell his claim to a new comer andmove to a more desirable location. These trades were common and posedno problem usually. [099 vol II]

Green later remarked that 'not a man in southeast Alabama owned thefirst foot of land until the land sales were started at Sparta.' [099vol II] This reference gives a good writeup of how land sales wereconducted. It is too lengthy for this document.
Green Beauchamp was a soldier of the Indian War and a statelegialator. [263]

Green Beauchamp and wife Caroline Kennon had no children, but raisedthe orphans of his brother, William. (50) This comment while perhapstrue is a little strange. William died in 1845 at age 52. Greenlived until 1883. At William's death, his youngest child was about14. His wife remarried the next year.
