Sixty-Second Alabama
Infantry Regiment

Lockhart's Battalion, the nucleus of this regiment, was organized atSelma, in January 1864, and was on duty in the State till July, whenit moved up to Cheha, and lost severely in the fight there withRousseau. A few days after, it was organized as the Sixty-secondAlabama regiment, at Mobile. Stationed at Fort Gaines, the regimentwas in the bombardment of that place, losing several killed andwounded, and the remainder captured. The prisoners were taken to NewOrleans and Ship Island, and subjected to brutal treatment at thehands of the enemy. Exchanged in Mobile Bay, Jan. 4, 1865. Placed ingarrison at Spanish Fort, as part of Thomas' brigade (with theSixty-third Alabama), the regiment withstood the siege there for sixdays, with some loss, and was then relieved by Holtzclaw's brigade. Itserved through the siege and bombardment of Blakeley, losing a numberkilled and wounded, and was captured in the assault on the works.Taken to Ship Island, the men were exchanged in time to be surrenderedwith the department. The regiment was composed wholly of young men,and was complimented in special orders by Gen. Lidell for its conductat Spanish Fort.

Sixty-Third Alabama

This regiment was organized at Blakeley, in July 1864, and nearly allof the men except two companies ('A'' and 'B') were conscripts fromvarious parts of the State, the officers being mostly veterans. Theregiment remained in the defenses of Mobile till ordered to SpanishFort, three days before the place was invested, March 1865. It was, with the Sixty-second, a part of Gen. Thomas' brigade, and lostseveral killed and wounded during the first six days' operations atSpanish Fort. Relieved, and sent to Blakeley, the Sixty-third arrivedthere in time to share in all the privations and perils of that siege. After some loss, it was captured with the fortress, April 9, 1865,about 300 in number, and exchanged just prior to the surrender of thedepartment.
