The 1805 Georgia Land Lottery was the first experiment of its kind in the United States. The legislative act of 1803 outlined the creation of 3 new counties, five districts in Baldwin and Wilkinson counties with each lot containing 202 1/2 acres and 3 districts in Wayne Co with each lot containing 490 acres. All fractions were held out to be sold at public auction in 1806. Registration fee was 12.5 cents per draw. The grant fee was $8.10 per 202 1/2 ac lot or $19.60 for a 490 ac lot.

Eligible participants had to be white, 21 years or older, a US citizen, and a resident or Georgia since May 1802. The county listed is where they lived in 1803 when they registered. They may have been living in another location in 1805. Single males without dependent children were entitled to 1 draw. Males with a wife and/or dependent children were entitled to two draws but may have only registered for 1 draw. Widowed females with dependent children were entitled to 2 draws but may have only registered for 1 draw. Orphans with both parents deceased or with a deceased father and a remarried mother were entitled to 2 draws but may have only registered for 1 draw. Orphans were not always designated as such on the list. 362.6
