REFERENCE: The information below is from a memorial entitled 'In Memory of Mrs.Martha Cox' written in 1896 by Rev Angus Dowling, cousin of husband William Fletcher Cox. A few years after her birth, the family removed from GA and settled near Skipperville, early in the year 1852. She married William Fletcher Cox in 1853.
They immediately moved to their new home about three miles southwest of Ozark. Early in the year 1857 they removed to TX and settled in Newton Co. However in a few years they returned to good old Alabama and settled their new and final home about five miles southwest of Ozark where they brought up their interesting family of beautiful daughters and noble sons.
She was the mother on nine children, six of whom were living at her death, three sons and three daughters, forty grandchildren, thirty eight of whom still live and three great grand children, all living.
During young womanhood she was a charming beauty. She was almost perfect in form face, and expression. Her manners were gentle and winning. Her conversation was easy and pleasing. Her character was pure and true. At home she was a reigning queen without knowing or showing it. She was a model house-keeper in neatness and elegance. Her hospitality was liberal and abundant. She was the light and joy of her home. Her loving and devoted confided in her perfectly, and adored her for her many charms and graces of person, mind and heart. She was the center and charm of her sweet daughters and noble sons.
As wife, mother, grand-mother, mother-in-law, daughter sister, friend, church member, neighbor, companion and kindred, she was all that these many relatives required. While yet a pretty, sweet girl she professed faith and hope in Jesus Christ, and joined the Baptist Church in whose fellowship and delightful communion she lived a beautifully consistent and pure life till called to 'The Church of the Fir Born' in heaven. At the time of her death she was a member of the Baptist Church in Ozark, and had been for about thirty seven years.
Although so good and pure in life and conduct, she was called in the wonderful providence of God to endure many afflictions and great sorrows. Out of these however, she rose higher in spiritual life, and hope.
While dwelling among the living and loved on earth, she had frequent and large communion with those loved ones who had gone on before. She was so abundantly sustained by the sufficiency of divine grace she suffered without complaining. As she neared her beautiful and sweet home in Heaven, she told her weeping husband and children, friends and all 'That her way was clear; and for all to meet her in Heaven.' Thus surrounded in her earthly home, she breathed her last at 8 P M on 28Apr 1896; aged fifty-eight years, 4 months, and 11 days.
She was laid to rest at Old Claybank Church at 4 PM on 29 April. Her tombstone reads: 'Farewell my loved wife, I hope to meet you in heaven, Beloved in life, Mourned in death.'. |
