Peter Barbre1 son of John Peter Barberie and Elizabeth Du Sauchoy was born in 1725 in North Carolina. Many references list the location as Tyrrell Co but that county wasn't formed until later.2 Tyrrell Precinct NC was formed in 1729 from parts of Bertie, Chowan, Currituck and Pasquotank Precincts. On May 8, 1734 in Bertie Prec, NC Peter Barbre. was a witness for the land sale of 640 ac from Thomas Sutton and wife Judith to John Leurton. DB D..1,3 In 1739 Albermarle Co NC was dissolved and its precincts became counties. Edgecombe Co NC was formed in 1741 from part of Bertie Co. Tarboro, the eventual county seat, was not chartered until 1760. On Jun 30, 1750 William Moore sold Peter Barbaree 100 acres on west side of Toisnot Swamp in Edgecombe Co, NC. Adjacent property owners: William Barnes and Rowland Williams.1
Peter married Elizabeth Stansell daughter of John Stansell and Sarah Godfrey Smithwick on Aug 22, 1750 in Tyrrell Co, NC.1,4
C. 1753, Peter and Elizabeth first settled on the west side of Toisnot Swamp in present day Wilson Co NC but shortly thereafter moved to a plantation in western Tyrrell (now Martin) County on Coneto Creek.1 In Edgecombe Co, NC in 1756 Peter Barbrey. witnessed a deed. DB 6 p69..1 In 1762 in Bertie Co, NC, Peter Barbaree. petitioned the court for administration on the estate of his brother Abraham and acquired Abraham's lands in Bertie County. His brother, Abraham, had died and his wife and child died shortly afterwards. On May 2, 1763, Sarah Bently vs Peter Barbare - detinue non detinuit (a form of action brought into court for the secure return of personal property from another person who obtained it legally, but has kept the property without the right to do so). The question to be decided by the court is who has the right to retain the property.Jury impanelled and sworn finds for the plaintiff [Sarah Bently] to retain and assess 20 pounds damages and 6 pence costs. Peter died in Nov, 1770 in Bertie Co, NC at 45 years of age. In Oct, 1783.In Oct 1783, Elizabeth (Stansell) Barbre sold the homeplace and further research has failed to locate where she moved. She apparently did not follow her sons Peter and Jesse to Duplin Co NC and none of the other children have been found in the various 1790 censuses. |
