Dempsey Toler1,2 son of William Toler and Anna Hannah Parker was born bef 1748 in Johnston Co, NC. Dobbs Co NC was formed in 1758 from the eastern part of Johnston Co. In 1779 the western part of Dobbs Co became Wayne Co. Dobbs was dissolved in 1791 and Glasgow and Lenior Co's were formed. Most of the early records of Dobbs Co were destroyed when the Lenoir Co Court House was burned in 1878.
William Toler and Dempsey Toler were residents in the tax list in 1769 in Dobbs Co, NC. This is an unusual tax list in that it shows the relationship of members of the household. It states that Dempsey and William Jr were brothers which would mean that William Sr was Dempsey's father.2

Dempsey Toler was opposed to a campaign that Capt John Wilson was planning. Micajah Brooks offered to take the place of Dempsey Toler while Dempsey remained in the fort. After the unit returned. In Oct, 1777 Dempsey Toler was taken prisoner by Creek Indians who killed John May and burned his house and kitchen and 45 bushels of wheat and stole his 9 horses and 40 head of cattle. John's wife Elizabeth was not harmed. Maybe she wasn't at home that day.3 Aft 1777, Dempsey Toler age 29 married Elizabeth age 15, the former wife of John May who had been killed by Indians.3
