Biography

Humphrey Stafford was also known as Knight of Grafton Stafford.1
Humphrey lived in Grafton, Herefordshire, EnglandG+.1 He had reference number 55-37, R881. He, son of Humphrey Stafford and Elizabeth Burdet, was born in 1400.1,3

Humphrey Stafford married Eleanor Aylesbury, daughter of Sir Thomas Aylesbury, Knight of Blatherwyck, and Katherine Pabenham, on 22 January 1423. Her maritagium included the manor of Blatherwycke, Northamptonshire.1,3

In June 1448. [p1f] and son [p2f] were assaulted at Coventry, Warwickshire, by Robert Harcourt, Knt, resulting in Richard's death. This initiated a continuing feud with the Harcourts, which resulted in the Staffords raiding Stanton Harcourt in May 1450, burining house and church, and driving the Harcouts into the church tower.2
. In 1450 Humphrey Stafford and his brother John (The Archbishop) lead an army against the Kentish rebellion from Jack Cade, his complaint being that 'the system of tax collection was unjust and extortive'.The rising was in no sense revoulutionary, but a demand for a reform of the existing order. The King replied two days later by commanding the gathering to disperse. It did not, and so the King marched his army through London to give battle to the rebels, but found their camp at Blackheath deserted. Cade had moved on towards Sevenoaks, and where the road ran narrow prepared an ambush. Once the royal army was caught in the bottleneck the rebels fired their arrows ,followed by a fierce charge in which both Sir Humphrey Stafford and his brother were killed. The King panicked and left the city undefended , Cade saw an oportunity to invade the abandoned city and marched back to Blackheath.

NOTE: Humphrey and his brother are mentioned in Shakespeare's Henry VI.2

Biography

Geoffrey V Geoffrey was also known as Geoffrey, Count of Anjou.1 He was also known as Geoffrey, Duke of Normandy.1 He was also known as Geoffrey Plantaganet, founder of the Plantaganet family Geoffrey.1 He was also known as Geoffrey Plantagenet.2,3 He had reference number 1-23, 118-25, 123-25. He, son of FULK V the Young and Erembourg, was born on 24 August 1113.1,3
. Geoffrey was the elder son of Fulk V of Anjou and Eremburga of LaFlèche, heiress of Elias I of Maine. King Henry I of England, having heard good reports on Geoffrey's talents and prowess, sent his royal legates to Anjou to negotiate a marriage between Geoffrey and his own daughter, Matilda. Consent was obtained from both parties, and on 10 June 1128 the fifteen-year-old Geoffrey was knighted in Rouen by King Henry in preparation for the wedding. Interestingly, there was no opposition to the marriage from the Church, despite the fact that Geoffrey's sister was the widow of Matilda's brother (only son of King Henry) which fact had been used to annul the marriage of another of Geoffrey's sisters to the Norman pretender William Clito. This fact is understandable considering the opposition to the marriage between Clito and Sibylla came from King Henry himself, not the church.2

Geoffrey V Geoffrey age ~15 married Matilda do Henry I age ~26, daughter of Henry I, King of England, and Matilda (Maud) of Scotland, in 1128 in Le Mans, Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, FranceG. The marriage was meant to seal a peace between England/Normandy and Anjou. She was eleven years older than Geoffrey, very proud of her status as an Empress and unhappy that she was marrying a mere count. Their marriage was a stormy one with frequent long separations, but she bore him three sons and survived him.1

. The year after the marriage Geoffrey's father left for Jerusalem (where he was to become king), leaving Geoffrey behind as count of Anjou. John of Marmoutier describes Geoffrey as handsome, red-headed, jovial, and a great warrior; however, Ralph of Diceto alleges that his charm concealed his cold and selfish character.2 Geoffrey V Geoffrey. When King Henry I died in 1135, Matilda at once entered Normandy to claim her inheritance. The border districts submitted to her, but England chose her cousin Stephen of Blois for its king, and Normandy soon followed suit. The following year, Geoffrey gave Ambrieres, Gorron, and Chatilon-sur-Colmont to Juhel de Mayenne, on condition that he help obtain the inheritance of Geoffrey's wife. In 1139 Matilda landed in England with 140 knights, where she was besieged at Arundel Castle by King Stephen. In the 'Anarchy' which ensued, Stephen was captured at Lincoln in February, 1141, and imprisoned at Bristol.A legatine council of the English church held at Winchester in April1141 declared Stephen deposed and proclaimed Matilda 'Lady of the English'. Stephen was subsequently released from prison and had himself recrowned on the anniversary of his first coronation.
[:TAB:]During 1142 and 1143, Geoffrey secured all of Normandy west and south of the Seine, and, on 14 January 1144, he crossed the Seine and entered Rouen. He assumed the title of Duke of Normandy in the summerof 1144. In 1144, he founded an Augustine priory at Chateau-l'Ermitagein Anjou. Geoffrey held the duchy until 1149, when he and Matilda conjointly ceded it to their son, Henry, which cession was formally ratified by King Louis VII of France the following year.
[:TAB:]Geoffrey also put down three baronial rebellions in Anjou, in 1129,1135, and 1145-1151. He was often at odds with his younger brother, Elias, whom he had imprisoned until 1151. The threat of rebellion slowed his progress in Normandy, and is one reason he could not intervene in England. In 1153, the Treaty of Wallingford allowed Stephen should remain King of England for life and that Henry, the son of Geoffrey and Matilda should succeed him.

Geoffrey and Matilda's children were:
1.Henry II of England (1133-1189)
2.Geoffrey, Count of Nantes (1 June 1134 Rouen- 26 July 1158 Nantes)died unmarried and was buried in Nantes
3.William X, Count of Poitou (1136-1164) died unmarried
Geoffrey also had illegitimate children by an unknown mistress (or mistresses): Hamelin; Emme, who married Dafydd Ab Owain Gwynedd, Prince of North Wales; and Mary, who became a nun and Abbess of Shaftesbury and who may be the poetess Marie de France. Adelaide of Angers is sometimes sourced as being the mother of Hamelin.2
Geoffrey V Geoffrey died suddenly on 7 September 1151. According to John of Marmoutier, Geoffrey was returning from a royal council when he was stricken with fever. He arrived at Château-du-Loir, collapsed on a couch, made bequests of gifts and charities, and died. He was buried at St. Julien's Cathedral in Le Mans France.1 He was buried in Cathederal of Saint Julian, Le Mans, Pays de la Loire, Sarthe, France, 48.00917; -0.1997222G.2

Biography

Cenred Cenred was also known as Cenred Cenred.1 He. Cenred of Wessex was a member of the House of Wessex and a member ofthe direct male line from Cynric to Egbert and probably never served as king. It is possible that Cenred ruled alongside his son Ine for a period. There is weak evidence for joint kingships, and strongerevidence of subkings reigning under a dominant ruler in Wessex, notlong before his time. Ine acknowledges his father's help in his codeof laws, and there is also a surviving land-grant that indicatesCenred was still reigning in Wessex after Ine's accession.

His father was Ceolwald of Wessex. Cenred had at least two otherchildren: Ingild, the great-grandfather of Ealhmund of Kent, and thegreat-great grandfather of Egbert; and Cuthburga, who married Aldfrithof Northumbria, and became abbess of Wimborne. There may also havebeen another daughter who was married to Aethelfrith of Wessex, butthis claim may have been substantiated to further Æthelheard ofWessex's claim to the throne. He had reference number 1-7. He, son of Ceowald, Did Not Rule,, was born in 644 in Wessex, EnglandG.

Cutha Cathwulf was the third son of Cuthwine and consequently a member of the House of Wessex. Although a member of the direct male line from Cynric to Egbert, Cathwulf was never king. He is said to have been born in c. 592 and his death date is unknown.

Due to the similarity of his name to his father's name, and the shadowy nature of early Anglo-Saxon genealogies, it appears that he was often confused with his father Cuthwine.

Cathwulf had two brothers; Cynebald, born 585, and Cedda, born 590.The name of their mother is not recorded, but it is possible that she died in the tumult surrounding Cuthwine's flight into exile given that Cuthwine had no more children after that time.

Details about the activities of Cathwulf during most of his life in exile are very hard to come by. He and his brothers remained in a powerful position throughout the reign of Cynegils, son of Ceol; andthen Cenwalh, son of Cynegils, became king.

In about the year 620 it appears that the upper Thames valley wherethe household of Cathwulf was based became too small to comfortably hold the three brothers. As the youngest, Cathwulf was the one who was forced to move - at any rate this is a sensible deduction given that he later turns up in what is now east Devon, on the western marches of Wessex and in constant conflict with Dumnonia. This was a Celtic tribe that inhabited Cornwall, although in Cathwulf's time their sphere of influence was much greater, extending over most of what is now Devon as well. The chronology of English dominance over Cornwall is unclear, but inevitably at about this time Cornwall came into conflict with the westerly-expanding kingdom of Wessex. There are no recorded charters or legal agreements showing Cornwall as part of Wessex. Furthermore, there is little economic, military, social, cultural or archaeologica levidence that Wessex established control over Cornwall, certainly not in those early days.

It is known that Cathwulf married a Dumnonian princess Gwynhafar, almost certainly a daughter of Clemen ap Bledric, as part of a(temporary, at least) alliance - probably the one mentioned above by Geoffrey of Monmouth, or maybe an earlier one. The marriage was perhaps unsuccessful, as he is believed to only have had one son,Ceolwald of Wessex.

In the year 645 Penda of Mercia overran the kingdom (in return forCenwalh's repudiation of Penda's sister) and was for three years king, sending Cenwalh into exile in East Anglia. Cathwulf is recorded as having been present at the negotiations along with his brothers, but little more is known of his activities. Nevertheless, much can be deduced. If this experienced prince was not the sole ruler of Wessex during the years of Cenwalh's exile (naturally in a subservient position to Penda) then it is likely that he was a member of the ruling body; but, given the tangled diplomacy of the times and his eastern power base, it is equally likely that he aided Cenwalh in his successful attempt to regain the throne in 648.

After this, he appears infrequently as a shadowy figure, apparently already passing into legend among the common people as a result of his long-held position against the (at times) brutal role of Ceol and his family. He probably died sometime during the second period of Cenwalh's reign, as he would have been past eighty by the year 672 when Cenwalh died, and there are no records of him doing anything in the turbulent times succeeding Cenwalh's death. It seems inconceivable that he would have lived to see the reinstatement of his line to the throne of Wessex.
Cutha (Cathwulf), Did Not Rule, died. unknown.

When the reluctant and quarrelsome pair were finally ordered by Henry I to do their duty and produce an heir to his throne, a son, the future Henry II, was born. Henry rejoiced that his dynasty was now secure and crossed to Normandy to see his new grandson, name sake and heir. The old king was said to have doted on the child.2
