Biography
Amous Johnston, son of Jacob Johnston and Mary Unknown, was born on 8 April 1746. Amous Johnston. In Jan 1767, Jacob Johnston deeded to his son Amous Johnston his home plantation on Little Swamp. (Edgecombe Co, DB 'C',p 418). Little Swamp was also known as Bettis Mill Swamp, Beaverdam, and Johnston's Mill Swamp. For several years prior to the Revolution, Amous Johnston was a Justice of the County Court. On 9 Sep 1779, he was appointed 2nd M ajor of the Edgecombe Militia by the Council of State, then meeting in Kingston. After the Revolution, he operated a store at the junction of Town Creek and Tar River and accumulated considerable landed property along Town Creek. He married (2) on 2 Jan 1777 DorcasWilliams, the daughter of John and Dorcas Williams of Pitt Co NC. She died 30 Sep 1797, leaving issue. He married (2) her sister CatherineWilliams, the widow of Henry Hines, but had no issue by her.Catherine Williams had several sons by Henry Hines, of whom Peter Hines married Prudence, of whom later. The will of Amous Johnston was probatedin Edgecombe Co in 1816, WB 'E' p133. The executors of the will were nephew Peter Hines, worthy friend Dr. Robert Williams, andsons-in-law Joel Battle, James Wilkins, and Peter Evans. in January 1767.1
