She said when she saw granddaddy come in the door she knew he was the man for her. She lived on Florida SR2. If you are traveling from Bascom to Donalsonville, GA you would go right past her place. She had a grocery store just before a bad curve, in fact, you could turn left just past the store, go up a dirt road to Gordan, AL. Going straight,you would pass Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She lived close to AL and GA.

Tom married Nancy Cureton, daughter of James Cureton/Curington, in Pike Co AL on Dec 20, 1867. According to Nancy's pension application, they were married 'near Ufala Barbor Co AL'. Mount Andrew is near Eufaula. However the marriage is listed in the Pike Co marriage records. Also, according to the pension application, Thomas Asbury went by the name of Tom.
Tom died on Feb 12, 1884 in Linwood, Pike Co AL. Linwood is northeast of Troy and near the Bullock Co line.

REFERENCE: Other than census records, most of this information comes from the Apr 15, 1922 pension application of Nancy Casey.

CIVIL WAR:
In Nancy's pension application, she listed his service as Co C of the 63rd Reg. I have found a record at the AL State Archives for a TA Casey serving in Co C of the 62nd Reg. At the time, I didn't realize that this could have been Thomas Asbury so didn't copy the info.
According to the history of both units, they were combined at one time. Also most of the personnel of both units were captured. He is not listed in the book 'Confederate State Roster - Alabama'. There is a J. Casey listed for the 63rd Inf Co I, E and a James T Casey listed for the 62nd Inf, Co A. Could that have been his brother?

Sixty-Second Alabama
Infantry Regiment

Lockhart's Battalion, the nucleus of this regiment, was organized atSelma, in January 1864, and was on duty in the State till July, whenit moved up to Cheha, and lost severely in the fight there withRousseau. A few days after, it was organized as the Sixty-secondAlabama regiment, at Mobile. Stationed at Fort Gaines, the regimentwas in the bombardment of that place, losing several killed andwounded, and the remainder captured. The prisoners were taken to NewOrleans and Ship Island, and subjected to brutal treatment at thehands of the enemy. Exchanged in Mobile Bay, Jan. 4, 1865. Placed ingarrison at Spanish Fort, as part of Thomas' brigade (with theSixty-third Alabama), the regiment withstood the siege there for sixdays, with some loss, and was then relieved by Holtzclaw's brigade. Itserved through the siege and bombardment of Blakeley, losing a numberkilled and wounded, and was captured in the assault on the works.Taken to Ship Island, the men were exchanged in time to be surrenderedwith the department. The regiment was composed wholly of young men,and was complimented in special orders by Gen. Lidell for its conductat Spanish Fort.

Sixty-Third Alabama
Infantry Regiment

This regiment was organized at Blakeley, in July 1864, and nearly allof the men except two companies ('A'' and 'B') were conscripts fromvarious parts of the State, the officers being mostly veterans. Theregiment remained in the defenses of Mobile till ordered to SpanishFort, three days before the place was invested, March 1865. It was,with the Sixty-second, a part of Gen. Thomas' brigade, and lostseveral killed and wounded during the first six days' operations atSpanish Fort. Relieved, and sent to Blakeley, the Sixty-third arrivedthere in time to share in all the privations and perils of that siege.After some loss, it was captured with the fortress, April 9, 1865,about 300 in number, and exchanged just prior to the surrender of thedepartment.

Margaret 'Mary' Starling was also known as Margaret Starling.2 She was also known as Margaret 'Mary' Howell.
The Shaftesbury Precinct of Abemarle County NC was renamed as the Chowan Prc of Albemarle in 1685. It was named for the Chowan Native American tribe which lived in the northeastern part of the Colony.
Margaret 'Mary' Starling, daughter of Sir William Starling, was born in 1700 in North CarolinaG. Some ancestry trees list her birth as Edgecombe Co. Looking at the county formation timeline, this is obviously not correct. Some ancestry trees list her father as Sir William Starling. Online research has not been able to document this connection and so I have chosen not to show it.2

He was one of the highest ranking officers from Edgecombe Co duringthe Revolution. He was a member of the assembly and together withNathan Boddie, introduced the bill which created Nash County.
