He. Carl grew up in Rockingham. After high school and college, he beganhis professional interest in banking, under the tutelage of a familyfriend, Leake S. Covington. On Nov 10, 1921, he married Emily Minshewof Eureka, Wayne Co NC. Later they moved to Walsotnburg, Greene CoNC. Carl continued his banking business and soon became involvedin church and civic duties. He was living in the greatest tobaccoregion in NC, and being mindful of his neighbors' needs and welfare,he soon became involved with their problems. He was the found ofthe Flu-Cured Tobacco Co-Op Stabilization Corporation. He proposedthe tobacco cooperative and served as its president for 32 years untilretiring in 1978. The cooperative runs the federal tobacco pricesupport program, lending farmers a support-level price for tobaccothat fails to bring a higher price from buyers. Carl was anorganizer of Waltsonburg Methodist and a former chairman of GreenCounty Board of Education. When their second child, Ann Louise, died,they legally adopted here four orphans.
