James Franklin 'Jim' Hicks was local merchant. He. Jim always told the story that his formal education came to an end atabout the fifth grade. At a very early age, he listened to his motherread the Bible and became an avid reader. He would read thedictionary from cover to cover to understand and use a very broadvocabulary. He served in France during World War I. He was anexperienced weaver in the mill before going into the service. Afterthe war, he decided he wanted to try business for himself. Heborrowed $2,400. Some of his many endeavors were: running a sawmill; service stations; delivery of mail; delivery of freight from theRockingham Railroad and the Seaboard Railroad; and selling tires. Hismain business was 'grocery'. For many years his store was located onSouth Lee Street. In the 1940's, Jim opened up a furniture storein Hamlet known as Home Furniture. He loved women so in 1957, hemarried his brother Lee's widow. Lee Hicks had married and had sixchildren and his first wife died. Then he married Mildred Williamsand they also had six children. Lee died in 1956 and then marriedMildred on Mar 6, 1957. Jim, Jr. was his father's best man when 'Mr.Hicks' married 'Mrs. Hicks'. Jim was very actice in the FirstBaptist church. He was a deacon for many years and also enjoyed beingthe 'attendance taker' for Sunday School. He, son of John Thomas Hicks and Martha Frances Sanford, was born on 13 October 1890 in Anson Co, NCG+.
