Biography

Clifford Augustus 'Cliff' Ballard. Cliff Ballard was born on 18 Nov 1883 in Woolsey, Fayette Co GA. Hewalked two miles a day to attend school in Woolsey.
In 1901, Miss Myrtle Matherson, from Texas, was visiting an aunt inthe area, and was wooed and won by Mr. Ballard. She died in 1914,leaving three living children. Nine years later he married Mamie BellMays and had two children. In 1868, he had 15 grandchildren and 23great-grandchildren.
He moved to the home where he lived in 1912. There is a date etchedon the outside of the chimney of the home, reading 1887, and thatpresumably is the year it was built.
He always farmed at least 70 acres and raised principally cotton andcorn, plus keeping a few cattle for milking. He actively farmed fromthe age of 8 in 1891 until 1968.
He had quite a reputation for being a shrewd mule trader. He washonest to admit that he lost on a few swaps, as well as gained. Hebought his first mule in 1899 and bought and sold mules until 1958.He would set out for Atlanta at 3 am, reaching College Park aboutsun-up. It would take him four to five hours to walk his mulepurchase back to Woolsey, arriving as late as 10 pm.
In 1868, his old home which was nearly 100 years old was the site of amovie that was filmed completely in Fayette Co. (name of the movie isunknown to me). He, son of Washington Augustus 'Bud' Ballard and Ada E. Sams, was born on 18 November 1883 in Woolsey, Fayette Co, GeorgiaG.1,2,3,4,3,5,6

William Joseph Ballard was lived in Fayetteville, GA. He. William Joseph Ballard, youngest of seven children of WashingtonAugusta Ballard and Ada Sams, was born 22 Jun 1892 at the home place amile west of Woolsey. He walked two miles to school to Inman hisfirst year, and the one mile to Woolsey for the rest of his education. He married Katie Belle Wesley, a Fayette Countian, on 18 Oct1914. They lived on the Ballard home place where he farmed until1937. In that year, they moved to Fayetteville, where he was DeputySheriff under County Sheriff M. G. Sams for six years. He then workedfor the Redwine Brothers for a year and in 1943 he ran for the officeof Sheriff, holding that office for six years. The next 21 yearsfound Mr. Ballard working for Fayette County and the State of Georgiaas a peace officer and revenue agent. They had five children. Heand his wife lived on Highway 54 just outside the Fayetteville CityLimits, farming on their 51 acres. He, son of Washington Augustus 'Bud' Ballard and Ada E. Sams, was born on 22 June 1892 in Fayette Co, GAG+. near Woolsey.1,2

[:TAB:]According to the Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles on ancestry.com, William M Culver of Georgia enlisted in Company A, Georgia 23rd Infantry Regiment on Aug 3, 1861 and was mustered out on Mar 28 1862 at Yorktown VA. It also states that he did not survive the war. The parents of William M Culver are unknown at this time, 8-25-2014.
