Biography
Joshua Rackley. Joshua Rackley was the son of Anthony Rackley.
In 1745 John Rackley III received a Granville Grant for land on Buffalo Creek in present-day Franklin Co NC. On 10 Apr 1749, Anthony and his son John purchased a tract of land on Fox Creek in Granville (present-day Franklin) County. Thus John III, his father, JohnII, Anthony, and uncle John III, and their rapidly maturing families settled near the Tar River a short distance downstream from present-day Louisburg, which was authorized to be laid out as the county seat in 1779.
Before long Anthony's son Joshua fell in love with his first cousin,Cityvias daughter of John III, and took her as his wife.
In 1758 Anthony and his son John "of Johnston Co and his wife Jane" sold the Fox Creek property to Joshua.
In Feb 1760 Joshua and Cityvias sold their plantation and followed his father and brother to Duplin Co NC. Although there were several spellings of Joshua's wife's name, she could write her own name and she spelled it 'Cityvias'.
Joshua and Citivias settled near his brother John on the west side of Six Runs Creek in a section of Duplin Co that fell into Sampson whenthe county was divided in 1784. All of the Rackleys in Sampson/Duplin at the time of the 1850 census are descendants of Joshua and Citivias.
Joshua appears to have been a prosperous planter. On 8 Sep 1760 he bought 200 acres on the we st side of the Six Runs. Subsequently heacquired five more tracts of land in Sampson Co, the last by a NC Land Grant in 1788.William Robinson and Daniel Fowler witnessed the deed for the Crane Creek purchase of 1771. In 1800, Joshua's household included 10 slaves. His farm lay on the east side of Crane Creek and on both sides of the road south from Clinton toward Wilmington (US421).
In 1801, Joshua sold the homeplace to his youngest son, Frederick. Joshua and Cityvias were living with their son Elijah in Duplin Co at the time of Joshua's death in 1813. He was survived by his wife and eleven grown children, two of whom served in the American Revolution. It is not known when Cityvias died or where she and Joshua are buried.
The Joshua Rackley homeplace and family graveyard formerly stood on the opposite side of the road. After the Joshua Rackley house was demolished, the graves were moved to the cemetery at Mt Gilead Baptist Church. He had reference number Rackley-6.
Joshua Rackley married
Cityvias Rackley, daughter of
John Rackley, III, and
Mary Person.
Joshua Rackley died in 1813 in Duplin Co, NC
