John Jasper has not been located in the 1860 census either in GA orAL. He was not listed in the slave owner census of Pike Co AL in 1860.
Two of his sons joined the Conderate Army in 1861. James Purifoy joined Company I of the 15th AL Infantry Regiment at Troy. Thomas Weldon Ballard joined Company I of the 22nd AL Infantry Regiment at Montgomery. James continued in service until the end of the war.Thomas was wounded in the leg which was later amputated.
In 1863 age 50, John entered the Civil War and served for eighteen months as a 1st Cherokee Brown Rifleman in Co F, 2nd Reg GA Vol Inf in the Army of Northern Virginia.
If John J. died in Jul 1864 and served for 18 months, he would have joined about Jan 1863. Family tradition has it that John J. went to Fayette Co GA to visit a sick relative. That probably was his son,Thomas Weldon, who had lost a leg and was recuperating at the home of his grand-mother in Fayetteville, Fayette Co GA. Family tradition says that he joined the Civil War there, possibly serving with his brother, Daniel G. S. Ballard. However much of the unit in which he served was from AL. See discussion below.

COMMENT:
There was a John J. Ballard who was on the muster roll of Company H, 36th GA Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This John Ballard deserted on 17 Nov 1862. It is not known if this is our John J. Ballard. This Company was from Whitfield Co, GA. Whitfield Co is in NW GA near Dalton. This needs further research. I saw a reference to a land lottery for a Elijah Ballard for NW GA. I believe about 1837. I dismissed this as another Elijah due to location. Maybe he got the land and gave/sold it to John J.
RESEARCH NOTES:
There were some other Ballard families living in early 1800 Greene Co GA in addition to our line. It is not known if they are related. A William Ballard from Franklin Co married a Nancy Byrd of Greene Co in early 1800's. Later there was also a Joshua Ballard by 1820.
As of 22 Dec 1996, I have researched all of the Ballards in Fayette Co GA and surrounding counties in 1850. I have researched most but not all Ballards in the entire states of Alabama and Georgia for 1850 and 1860 and I have not been able to locate John Jasper Ballard Sr.
