Biography

William Stansell, Jr., was also known as William Stancell, Jr. He was also known as William Stansell. He. William Stancill Jr married Africa Smith, daughter of David and AfricaSmithwick Smith. It was common in those days to name children aftercontinents such as Africa, Asia, etc.
Before the marriage they entered into a contract dated Mar 14, 1731and recorded in Tyrrel Co Registry in Book 4, page 153. The contractreads in part as follows: William Stancill, and Africa Smith do fullyagree to join together in the wholy state of matrimony and ye sdAfrica having in her maiden life purchased with her own money, onenegro girl named Jane, and with her increase to remain Africa's. Apre-nuptial agreement from 1731.
It appears that he lived north of the Morratock and got his bride fromthe other side.
In 1741, William received by deed 300 acres from John Smithwick inBarty (Berty) county on the Kishie (Cashie) River.
In 1745 William Jr. and Africa conveyed two tracts of land on thesouth side of the Kesiah river to Thompson.
In 1747 William Jr and Africa conveyed to Jordan 245 acres 'on whichwe now liveth sitchiate upon the Cashy River.' By this deed heapparently sold his home place and left that area for Pitt Co (thenBeaufort County).
In 1753 William Jr. conveyed to his children, Elizabeth, Atha, andAfrica, several slaves and to William III, 'my plantation-160 acres'and to Peter 160 acres. Note the names Africa and Peter. This deeddoes not contain a description of the land to tell exactly where itwas, but later deeds prove it to be in the Conetoe area of Pitt County(then Beaufort). Pitt Co was established from Beaufort Co in 1760.
The Pitt Co records reveal that William III became a large land ownerin the Conetoe Creek area. In 1763 he received a land grant of 500acres on Conetoe Creek from the Earl of Granville.

Dempsey Toler served in the. Revolutionary War in Georgia. Dempsey Toler was serving in the military at Hill's Fort in then Wilkes Co GA according to the pension application of Micajah Brooks. Dempsey Toler was opposed to a campaign that Capt John Wilson was planning. Micajah Brooks offered to take the place of Dempsey Toler while Dempsey remained in the fort. After the unit returned. In October 1777 Dempsey Toler was taken prisoner by Creek Indians who killed John May and burned his house and kitchen and 45 bushels of wheat and stole his 9 horses and 40 head of cattle. John's wife Elizabeth was not harmed. Maybe she wasn't at home that day.4

On Dempsey's claim, it shows: horse 50 lbs, mare 20 lbs, horse 10 lbs. Elizabeth claims that when she was married to John May, now deceased, Indians killed him, burned their house and kitchen and burned about 45 bushels of wheat and stole about 9 horses and 40 head of cattle. Elizabeth's claim was for 80 lbs.4
