Biography

John Rackley, II. Type: GENERAL NOTES.2 He. The only documented child of John Rackley I and Martha North is JohnRackley II who probably was born about 1670. John I died intestate inEssex County VA apparently in 1698. In March of 1711/1712, JohnRackley II of South Farnham Parish, Essex County, purchased fromRichard Long 200 acres in St. Marys Parish, Essex County, VA, adjacentto the land of Samuel Ellit. The next day John sold to Richard Long400 acres in St. Marys Parish, 'about 12 miles above Nazemond Town' onthe south side of the Rappahannock behind the land of John Gillett. The latter transaction was recorded 10 Apr 1712. On 26 Apr 1712,Augustine Smith was granted those same 400 acres 'Granted EdwardRackley, dec'd, 21 Apr 1657, & renewed 18 Mar 1662; lying behind landof John Gillcott, aboute 12 mi. above Nansemond Town; beg. on the N.side of the main run into the head of Moone's Cr; which land wasclaimed by John Rackley, his son, who also failed to palnt &c.'Whether Mr. Long or Mr. Smith actually gained possession of the land,we do not know; however documents involving this single tract landclearly indicate that Edward was the father of John (I) who also had ason named John (II). In June 1713 John Rackley II of the Parish ofSouth Farnham in the county of Essex within the colony of Virginia son& heir apparent of John Rackley late of the aforesaid parish Countyand Colony Dec'd sold William Grinall, planter, a plantation of 180acres 'given to my father John Rackley Dec'd by a certain will ofAnthony North dec'd dated 23 August 1684'. The plantation was on thesouth side of Rappahannock River about 2 miles above Hobs His Hole, which is at the present-day town of Tappahannock. The sale to WilliamGrinall, now John's stepfather, is a release of John Rackley's rightto a share of the family property. Apparently John Rackley II,his wife Jane, and their children moved to Henrico Co VA in or about1713. On 4 Oct 1728, John Rackley II, along with William Kennon andJames McMillan, witnessed the will of Leonary Dyson. John Sr (II) andJohn Jr. (III) paid taxes in Henrico Co in 1736. John Sr paid twolevies, the second one apparently for his son Anthony. In the Apr1738 Court Session in Henrico Co VA, Jane Ratly was appointedexecutrix of the estate of John Ratley with William Kennon Jr assecurity. That indicates John Rackley II died in early 1738 andsuggests family ties with the Kennons. John's estate papers are thelast record we have of the Rackleys in Henrico Co. He, son of John Rackley, I, and Martha North, was born about 1670 in Essex Co, VAG+.1

Biography

Anthony Rackley. Anthony Rackley was obviously named afted his great-grandfather,Anthony North.
On 13 Feb 1737, Anthony Rackley witness the will of Peter Leath ofSouthwark Parish, Surry Co VA. The last record we have of theRackleys in colonial VA is the sale to Charles Leath of 200 acres onthe Nottaway River and Indian Swamp in Surry (present-day Sussex) Coby Anthony Ratleif, who used as his mark the large underlined capitalA. Anthony Rackley in NC later used the same mark. The land Anthonysold in 1741 had been obtained by grant in1740. Landmarks indicatethat it is situated in the southwestern corner of present-day SurryCo. Anthony's involvement with the Leaths suggest a familyrelationship.
While Anthony was in Surry/Sussex Co from 1737 to 1741, his son Johnpushed southward into a part of Bertie Co NC.
On 10 Apr 1749, Anthony Rackley and his son John bought land on FoxCreek in Granville (now Franklin Co) Co NC from William Sims. On 30Apr 1753, John (Anthony's son) received a grant from Earl Granvillefor 560 acres on Buffalo Creek in present-day Franklin. The land wassurveyed on 20 Oct 1751. A sworn chain bearer was supposed to be atleast 21 years of age and someone other than the grant applicant.John sold land from his grant to Saul and Person Rackley in 1755.Thus the brothers John and Anthony and their rapidly maturingfamilies, settled near the Tar River in Franklin, just a few mileseast of the place where Louisburg was authorized to be laid out as thecounty seat in 1779. He, son of John Rackley, II, and Jane Mills, was born about 1700 in Essex Co, VAG+.
Anthony Rackley died after 1765. Duplin Co, NC, probably.
