Biography

Edward Rackley. In the early days of the Colony of Virginia, death from natural causes and Indian raids seemed to claim the colonists as fast as new settlers arrived. To encourage people to come to the New World, a policy of headrights was adopted. Fifty acres of land would be given to each person who paid the cost of transport for himself or for any other person. Headright records indicate that Edward Ratcliffe camefrom England to Virginia in or before 1639. In 1641 Richard Preston received 250 acres for the transport of five servants, including 'Edward Ratcliffe'. Both citations appear to be misspellings of the Rackley surname, which also appears in Virginia records as Ratlief,Ratleiff, Ratliffe, Rackly, Racle, Racly, Ratly, and Rattle. Names were spelled as they sounded in those days. There is no documentationas to the identity of the other four 'servants' who came over with Edward nor any documentation as to why they came. Richard Rackley also arrived in 1639 and nearly 40 years later, about 1676, William Rackley settled in New England, having come over as boatswain on a ship out of Bristol. No relationship is known between Richard,William, and our Edward. Edward Rackley probably remained in the service of Richard Preston for the customary period of seven years.Once on his own, Edward seems to have prospered. In 1657, he obtained the aforementioned 400 acres of land in present-day Essex County, VA.The site 12 miles above Nansemond Towne is approximately half way between the modern towns of Tappahannock and Port Royal. On 21April 1657, Edward Rackley patented 400 acres of land on the southside of the Rappahannock River, behind land of John Gilliot, about 12 miles above Nansemond Towns. He obtained that land through headrights, by having paid the passage to the Colony of Virginia for eight new settlers. The date of Edward's patent is only 50 years after the founding of the colony. In 1658 Edward and his Essex County neighbor Peter Ford patented 640 acres in New Kent County, VA by headrights. In 1663 they acquired another 640 acres in New Kent, also by headrights. There are presently no known records documenting the disposition of the New Kent land. This 1663 record is the last known record of Edward Rackley.
Edward Rackley died about 1663 in Essex Co, VAG+.

Biography

Elizabeth was also known as Elizabeth Smithwick. She. Hugh's wife's name was Elizabeth. Some researchers feel she was a Windley since Robert Windley settled on an adjoining plantation and Edward and Elizabeth Smithwick witnessed Robert Windley's will. These researchers feel the Elizabeth who witnessed the will was Hugh's wife. Hugh's marriage to Elizabeth occurred by 1644 and probably after 1642 when Hugh was listed as a headright. There are no known vital statistics for Elizabeth Smithwick. After the death of Hugh Smithwick, she married a Mr. Ward who predeceased her. Elizabeth was still living as late as May 1694, but the date of her death isu nknown. She, was born about 1625. guess.

Biography

Frances Almira Culver was next to oldest of 11 children, never married. She. She was an educator, taught for more than 50 years and was greatlyadmired and loved by those who knew her. It is said that she had thebearing of a queen, was a brilliant conversationalist, and was afountain of wisdom. It is significant that she had many namesakes amongthe members of her family. From an article in the 22 Oct 1862Troy newspaper, 'Miss F. A. Culver has handed to Judge Fitzpatrick, 4pair of socks, a gift for the soldeirs. If each lady in our countywould do the same, or even half as much, the soldiers from this countywould have a plenty of socks gratuitously furnished. Will nothundreds of others, if not all of the ladies, do as Miss Culver hasdone? Time could not be better employed than in knitting socks, andby furnishing them, the ladies are directly giving great and efficientaid to the cause of our independence. Shall the soldiers from ourcounty go sockless through the winter? The answer is entirely withthe ladies, and we believe the response wil be, No. (130.) She, daughter of Levin Ellis Culver and Frances Ann Broadnax, was born on 23 December 1825 in Hancock Co, GAG+.
Frances lived in Pike Co, ALG+, in 1880.
Frances Almira Culver died in 1908 in Troy, Pike Co, ALG.
