James Washington Culver. James Washington Culver, the second son and second child, of TassoUranus Culver and Sarah Elvie Locke was born at Perote In Bullock CoAL on 12 Mar 1875. He may have been named for his father's uncle, whowas also named James Washington Culver. At a young boy, he had anoperation for appendicitis on a table at his home in the 'Brookshouse' in Perote by a Dr. Hunter from Union Springs. This was thefirst operation in Perote. He received a Bachelor's and Master'sdegree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (later renamed AuburnUniversity). In 1894, he was a member of one of the early Auburnfootball teams. He also was an early member of the Sigma Nufraternity founded by his older brother, Jesse Locke. James alsotaught in a Junior College at Jackson AL and attended summer school atthe University of Tennesse. He was later a professor of Greek andLatin at Austin College in Texas for five years. He later movedto San Antonio, TX and bought a very select, small school (TexasMilitary Institute) with the express purpose of training sutdents forentrance into the larger Eastern Universities. On 19 Jun 1906, hemarried Lillian Vinson at Sherman TX. Daughter Sarah Elizabeth wasborn at Sherman on 2 Jun 1907. On 8 Jun 1926, James attended ahomecoming at Perote AL He 'Delivered a telling address, pregnantwith the spirit of the home'. About 500 people attended. From1926 to 1936 he leased the school. In 1936, he re-purchased TMI andoperated it until 1952 when it was repurchased by the EpiscopalChurch. He retired as Professor Emeritus with a substantial pensionfor life and half that amount to be paid to his estate for five yearsafter his death. He died on 5 Feb 1961 in San Antonio. He, was born on 12 March 1875 in Perote, Bullock Co, ALG.
