Biography

Michael Barnet Locke was also known as Michael B Locke. He, son of Richard H. Locke and Susannah Reynolds Mothershead, was born on 10 September 1839 in AlabamaG+.1
On 10 May 1847 in Montgomery Co, ALG, Jesse Locke became the guardian of Michael Barnet Locke.2

Michael Barnet Locke appeared on the census in 1860 in Perote, Pike Co, ALG, [m].3
. He was a member of the Co G, the Perote Guards, of the First AL Infantry Regiment which was mustered into service on Mar 1861. On 20 Jan 1862, the Perote Guards with Lt. Locke at their head, arrived at Union Springs on its way home for a 30 day furlough having just re-enlisted for the war. The men appeared to be in fine health and spirits, and the fires of patriotism are all aglow in their bosoms. An article in the 5 Feb 1862 Troy newspaper states: 'I will be at Troy, on Saturday, 8th Feb., and will enlist all able bodied men into my Company, who are desirous of serving their country. Young men, rally o the standard of your country. We have been defeated in the last battle on account of the weakness of our forces, and are now in danger of being overrun. You have no excuse not to volunteer. Every inducement that a patriot would ask, has been offered you. M. B. Locke, Capt.'
An article in the 7 May 1862 Troy newspaper states that letters have been received in this city from members of the 1st AL Reg, now prisoners of war in Yankee land. The officers of the Reg are at Columbus, Ohio, and the privates are at Springfield and Chicago, ILL. Letters to officers should be short, carefully avoid all allusion to political topics, and address to ___ ___, prisioner of war, Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio.
A 28 May 1862 article, states that if friends of the members of Capt. Locke's and Wood's companies desire it, and will furnish the funds by the 1st of Jun, Cap Dawson will undertake to visit them and deliver all funds sent, if allowed to get to them, and if not, will return the money less his expenses. A 31 Dec 1862 article, 'The legal representations of all deceased soldiers who belong to my company, are directed to call upon Capt. D. A. McCall, at Perote, and get certificates of the amount the government is due in each case, and place them in the hands of Capt. McCall for delivery to the parties interested, with instructions how to proceed to obtain the money.Port Hudson, LA, Dec 31, 1862, M. B. Locke Capt, Co G, 1st Reg AL Vol's'.
A 7 Jan 1863 article gives a long list of prisoners of Co E, J. H. Wood Capt, and Co G, M. B. Locke Capt, who have died in Yankee prison. Many were from phneumonia (sp), measles, diarrhea, typhoid fever and camp fever. A 25 Mar 1863 article mentions that Capt M. B. Locke received a SC palmetto tree as a gift at Point Pleasant where they were engaged in a big battle with the enemy. Gen McCall surrended the 1st AL soon after. He was elected as Lt Col of the Regiment in 1862. A 5 Aug 1863 article prints a14 Jul 1863 letter from W. B. Locke, Lt Col of the 1st AL Reg from Port Hudson LA. He thanks and praises his unit for its service at Port Hudson. He mentions that he was prevented by severe illness from commanding you all the while. Evidently the men are to be released from prison, he states, ' You will return to your homes to await your exchange, and if I should not be released from prison in time to go with you to the field, I trust you will emulate your past deeds and strive to add new laurels to those you have already won. Lt Col Locke is still listed as a prisoner at Johnson's Island when Lt.E. D. Murphree is released.4
