Alfie Casey Horne was accountant. He. Alfie Casey Horn died Sept. 24, 2007, at his home in Dothan. Hisinsight, constant humor and gentle spirit are deeply missed. Mr. Hornwas born Feb. 12, 1912, to Alto Horne and Sarah Augusta Helms Horne atthe family farm outside of Louisville. Life on the farm taught manyskills - animal husbandry, crop production, marksmanship, carpentry,fishing and food preservation, among others. Throughout his life, Mr.Horn maintained a deep love of animals and respect for our naturalenvironment. His was a life of self-sufficiency, continual learning,hard work and generosity toward others. After graduating fromLouisville High School, Mr. Horn attended Berry College in Georgiathen transferred to the University of Alabama where he earned a degreein Commerce and Business Administration, specializing in Accounting.Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the army and served in thePacific during World War II. Following the war, he met and marriedIrene Torgerson and began a 20-year career with the Internal RevenueService in Hawaii, Montana and Alaska. He 'retired' to Dothan in 1968,then worked for more than 30 years doing accounting work and preparingtax returns for families throughout the area. His lifelong fascinationwith the game of Bridge earned him the honor of Life Master. Afteryears of study and enjoyment of the game, he developed his own uniquesystem, which resulted in his original book Contract Bridge: LimitedOpening Bids. Finding Bridge an excellent way to exercise his keenmathematical mind, he taught classes in the game and participated intournaments throughout the country. His parents, Alto and Sarah; andbrothers, Alto Lee, Howard, Ralph and Cyrus Henry; and sister, GladysAugusta, all preceded him in death, as have his wife, Irene TorgersonHorn, sisters-in-law, Myree Price Horne and Annie Simmons Horne, andcousin, Winfred Horne. Survivors include daughter, Judith Ann Horn;granddaughter, Tesya Rose Horn; sister-in-law, Mildred Greene Horneand her family ? niece, Mary Ethel Horne Woodham, husband, Colon Deanand family of Birmingham; nephew, Carl Horne, wife, Diane and familyof Hampton, Va.; and nephew, Charles Horne, wife Betty and family ofHuntsville. Also surviving are niece, Diane Horne Clouse, husbandSteve and family of Ozark; nephew, Tommy Horne, wife Linda Kay andfamily of Clayton; nephew, Wayne Horne, wife Jane and family ofMcAlla; nephew, Bernard Horne, wife Sue and family of Ashville; niece,Sarah Lee Horne McColgan and family of Mansfield, Mo.; and otherrelatives within the Horne family. A memorial service will be heldSunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Byrd Funeral Home onHighway 84 West in Dothan. Family will meet with visitors followingthe service. In lieu of flowers, we request contributions be made toHouston-Love Memorial Library - a place Mr. Horn enjoyed for manyyears, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
