William J. Blan was newspaper.
William J. Blan. _ Type: GENERAL NOTES.2 He. William J. Blan, son of John J. Blan who died shortly after the warbetween the States, was born on 18 Apr 1845 in Macon Co AL. Both ofhis parents were born in SC.
Early in his boyhood, the family moved to Troy and he spent the restof his life there.
He entered the printing office of the local paper at Troy and masteredthe art of type-setting while a boy. He made a remarkably rapid andcorrect typo.
As soon as he was old enough after the great war began, he enlisted inthe artillery and went to the front. He was a member of Clanton'sBattery of the AL Artillery. He passed that trying ordeal and camehome when peace was declared bearing the reputation of a brave andfaithful soldier. His comrades in arms delighted in after years tobear testimony to his noble qualities.

1869 Mr. Blan was married in 1869 to Miss Julia Ballard, of Milo, whosurvives him. He was 24, she was 20. Four children blessed theirunion, Misses Kate and Lucille, Mrs. L. A. Hanchey and Sidney HerbertBlan, the present editor of the Messenger.

After the war he re-entered the printing office as a composititor. Inthe early 1870's, he purchased the Troy Messenger from the veteranprinter, John Post, and has been proprietor of it ever since, a periodof over thirty years.
Being of a quiet and retiring disposition, although universally liked,Mr. Blan was not an office seeker. He chose rather to stay in thebackground and help his friends. He was always faithful in hisdevotion to the fortunes of the Democratic party. Once his friendsput him into the responsible place of county treasurer, in which heproved himself a model officer. He also served the city as councilmanonce. This consitituted his services as a public servant.
In 1877 he became a member of Troy Lodge No 56, F & A. M. and shortlyafterwards was made a royal arch mason. It is needless to say that healways lived up to the teaching of this benevolent organization.
1880 Pike Co AL, Troy #21/22: William J. Bland newspaper 35 AL SC SC,Julia 30 GA GA GA, Kate 9 AL AL GA, Willie 5 AL AL GA, Sidney 3 AL ALGA
On 15 Aug 1885, a shocking calamity befell him, the effects of whichdoubtless contributed largely to wreck his nervous system and hastenhis death. At a reunion of the Confederate Veterans held on the hillsouth of the city, it was decided to have a sham battle. Mr. Blanbeing an expert artillerist was put in charge of a battery. He wasserving the cannon against an assault made by the local militarycompany, when a premature discharge blew off both hands, and otherwiseseverly injured him. For many weeks his life hung in the balance, butgood nursing, skillful medical attention assisted by his ownremarkable nerve and will power, at length brought him through thisordeal of suffering though maimed and helpless to a degree that wouldhave appalled and crushed a less resolute man. Mr. Blan bravelyrenewed the struggle for those dependent upon him. There is somethingheroic as well as patheticin the last degree in this battle againstcruel and hopeless misfortune. Nobody will every know the anguish hesuffered, because he went forward so cheerfully. No one ever heardhim complain, or murmur. Deprived of his hands he could work at thecase no longer, and could only give oversight to his business. Aftera while, however, he was furnished with an articicial hand, with whichhe learned to write and took charge of the editorial work. In this hewas surprisingly successful. With limited education in school, he hadthe practical training of the printing office, which for some purposeis more valuable than that acquired by many who pass through academyand college.
Some three years ago incipient paralysis forced him to desist fromwork altogether. The trouble increased as the months went by, unti hewas forced to stay at home most of the time. Early on the morning ofthe 23rd, he suffered from a stoke of appoplexy and sank at once intoa condition of coma from which he never roused.
The funeral was one of the most largely attended that ever occured inTroy. The church services were conducted at the residence by hispastor, Rev. J. M. Dannelly, following which the masonic fraternity, under the direction ofWorshipful Master Stephen A. Pilley took charge. After the conclusion of the rites at the grave, the Troy Rifles, under command of Lt. Harry Wiley, fired a salute over the grave andsounded taps. The whole funeral ceremonies were fittingly impressiveas the last tributes of respect to the memory of a faithful christian,an upright mason and a fearless soldier. [056]. He, son of John J. Biography

Elizabeth Casey was also known as Betsy Casey. She was also known as Elizabeth Johnston. She. Elizabeth was probably born about 1774 based on census records and herplace in the order of children in Jeremiah's will.
1790 Wayne Co NC census: probably one of the 4 females living withJeremiah
1800 location unknown, not listed with parents or sister SarahSanderford
An Elizabeth Casey married a Thomas Johnston on Jul 19, 1802 inCabarras Co NC which is two counties northwest of Richmond Co and isthe location of Charlotte.
Elizabeth's sister, Sarah/Sally, married Noah Sanderford. In 1800,Noah Sanderford and his family are living in Cabarras Co NC. By 1810the Sanderfords had moved to Richmond Co NC.
1810 Cabarrus Co NC: wife of Thomas Johnston is 26-45 (1765-1784)
1820 Cabarrus Co NC: wife of Thomas Johnson is > 45 (bef 1775)
1830 Cabarrus Co NC: wife of Thomas Johnston is 50-60

1850 not found. Assumed deceased.

NOTES:
Johnston and Johnston appear to have been used interchangeably duringthis time period.

There are numerous Johnston marriages in Cabarrus Co in the early1800-1850 time period.

There is no direct proof that this Elizabeth whose census records Ihave listed is the Elizabeth Johnson mentioned in Jeremiah's will. Her age does fit the assumption that in his will, Jeremiah listed hischildren in order of age.

There was a Thomas Johnston/Johnson listed in the 1810, 1820 and 1830Cabarrus Co census records. The ages support that this could havebeen the same person. In 1840 Cabarrus, there was an ElizabethJohnston whose age matchesthe age of the female living with Thomas inthe earlier census records.

In 1850 Cabarrus, the David Johnston is the only Johnston familylisted. David's age is listed as 49 which would place his birh in1800 or 1801. Thomas and Elizabeth were married Jul 19 1802 so Davidis probably not their son. She, daughter of Jeremiah M Casey and Nancy, was born about 1774 in Dobbs Co, NCG+.
[S] was possibly listed in the household of Jeremiah M Casey in the in 1790 census in Wayne Co, NCG. Jeremiah Casey: 1 male > 16 (Jeremiah), 3 males < 16 (?, James, ?); 4 females (Nancy, 3 of the following Mary, Lovey, Elizabeth, Nancy, and Sarah); no slaves. There is at least one unidentified male <16 in this census. If the 2nd unidentified male is Samuel and the census is correct, then Samuel would not have been born before 1775.2,3

Elizabeth Casey married Thomas Johnston on 19 July 1802 in Cabarrus Co, NCG.

Elizabeth lived in Cabarrus Co, NCG, in 1810.
On 6 December 1811 in the will of Jeremiah M Casey in Richmond Co, NCG, daughter Elizabeth Casey was listed as an heir.3
Elizabeth lived in Cabarrus Co, NCG, in 1820.
Elizabeth lived in Cabarrus Co, NCG, in 1830.
Elizabeth lived in Cabarrus Co, NCG, in 1840.
Elizabeth Casey died before 1850. Cabarrus, North Carolina maybe.

Biography

.

Spotsylvania Co VA was formed on Dec 17 1720 from parts of Essex, King & Queen, and King William Counties.

Robert Dowling, was born in 1730 in Spotsylvania Co, VAG. Most sources say Augusta Co but it wasn't formed until 1738.1
.

Orange Co VA was formed on Sep 20 1734 from Spotsylvania Co.

.

Augusta Co VA was formed in 1738 from part of Orange Co and is located in the Shenandoah Valley on the western edge. It was originally a huge area but many parts were carved out to form new counties and several states. It is the 2nd largest county in the state.

Robert Dowling married Unknown Wife estimated 1744 in VirginiaG. The name of his first wife is unknown. Grandson Dempsey Dowling did remember that she was of VA birth. They had one son, William and his mother died in childbirth.2

Robert Dowling married Sarah Guinn in 1754 in Augusta Co, VAG.1,2

The family of Robert Dowling moved from Augusta Co, VAG, to Darlington Co, Cheraws Dist, SCG, before 1773. That is the date in SC that King George II's deputy-surveyor, John Bremar, Esquire,'Admeasured and laid out unto Robert Dowling a plantation or tract of land containing 300 acres. It is on Boggy Gully, bounding on all sides on vacant land and hath such shape and marks as the above plat represents.'

Robert's tract was cut through the middle by Bobby Gully branch, a stream that can be seen on present-day Darlington Co SC maps. It is not known where Robert and Sarah's home stood. Dempsey stated that his grandfather's home was on Jeffires Creek, a larger stream two miles east of Boggy Gully. By 1900 the site of Robert's old log house or that of one of his son's was faintly visible.

Robert's move to SC was five years after the first Methodist church was founded in America. His daughter-in-law is known to have joined a Methodist Church twenty-six years after this. With all the Dowling emigrants from Ireland being Catholic, one wonders when and how Robert or his forebear was converted to Methodism. Did Bishop Francis Asbury accomplish the task? If so, the job was done well, for three of the grandsons became Methodist preachers.

Robert had no use of strong drink. The year after he arrived in SC, court records of the district in which he lived mention his complaint to the Grand Jury of a Joseph Gourly's drunkenness.2
In 1776 Robert Dowling. Shortly after the call to arms by America's revolutionists, Robert became a soldier. He chose to fight with the men of his home state. By May of 1777 he was enrolled as a private with Captain William Vause's Company of the 12th Virginia Regiment. Records of the same unit several months later showed his name (Robert Doling) on the invalid list with eight and 24/72nds dollars of pay due him.

Later he was with the 6th Regiment of the NC Continental Infantry with Captain White's outfit. He fought at Musgrove's Mill, Guilford Courthouse, and in two battles that historians mention as America's mightiest blows for freedom: the Battle of the Cowpens and the Battle of King's Mountain. Pay voucher number 1563 in NC records (Vol 16page 1042) shows that Robert's pay for eight years of military service was a total of $186.3,2

Robert Dowling was the Head of Household in the census in 1790 in St Thomas Par, Cheraws Dist, SCG+. Robert Dowling: males 2>16; females 3. The number of females has been written over and the number cannot be determined. It could be 3.

In America's first census of 1790, Robert was still a backwoods farmer. He owned no slaves. The four youngsters living with him and Sarah were most likely those of his martyred son William. Nearby were the pioneer families of Saoni Boutwell and John Stokes, families whose descendants would later marry Robert's offspring. Sons James and John still lived, with over a score of grandchildren.4

Robert Dowling signed a will in 1793. Robert's last testament, is on record in the courthouse of Darlington Co SC.
'I, Robert Dowling of State of South Carolina, County of Darlington, being very weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God calling into the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men to once die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say princepely and first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried indecent Christian burial at the discrietions of my executors nothing do iutting at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty power of God and as touching such wordly estate wherein it hath pleased God to bless me in this life. I leave my wife Sarah Dowling and James Dowling (both of the state of South Carolina) for and absolute Executors to them my last will and testament and I do hereby utter my disalow revoke and dessavou all and every other former testament wills segours bequeaths and executors by me in any wise before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming these this and no other to be my last will and testament in witnys where of I have hearunto set my hand and seal this 20 day of March in year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety-four.' Biography

Mary Casey was also known as Mary Parish. She. The only mention of Mary is in her father's will where she is listedas Mary Casey. Birth year cannot be established based on censusrecords. Assuming the children in Jeremiah's will are listed in orderof birth and that Marywas old enough not to move with the family toRichmond Co in 1796, her birth can be estimated as 1778. 1790 Wayne CoNC: probably one of the 4 females living with Jeremiah 1800 1807Cabarrus Co NC: Polly Casey married David Parash on May 28, 1807.1810 1820 1830 1840 1850 NC - no David, Polly, or Mary Parrish orother spelling that fits RESEARCH NOTE: David Parash married PollyCasey in Cabarrus Co NC on May 28 1807. Polly is sometimes a nicknamefor Mary. I have chosen not to list this marriage based on lack ofcensus information for David Parash/Parrish and wife. She, daughter of Jeremiah M Casey and Nancy, was born about 1781 in Dobbs Co, NCG+.

There is at least one unidentified male <16 in this census. If the 2nd unidentified male is Samuel and the census is correct, then Samuel would not have been born before 1775.1,2

Mary Casey married David Parish, son of David Parish and Judith Holland, on 28 May 1807 in Cabarrus Co, NCG.

On 6 December 1811 in the will of Jeremiah M Casey in Richmond Co, NCG, daughter Mary Casey was listed as an heir.2
