Rev Joseph William Phillips, Sr., married Nancy Jane Thomas in 1877.

. Joseph William Phillips was a school teacher and attended Howard College some. Among the Missionary Baptist churches that he pastored were Blue Springs, Salem, Spring Hill, Pentisle, and Morgan. He was a prosporous business man and a master farmer who accumulated extensive land holdings and real estate. Not only did he prosper but the tenants on his farms did well also. Many were able to buy and pay for land of their own while working for the Rev Joe Phillips. His wife,Nancie Jane, was an outstanding Christian lady. The attractive Phillips home, a mile or so north of Salem Church on the 'Maryanna Road', was widely known for its hospitality and gracious living.

Rev Joseph William Phillips, Sr., died on 4 January 1937 in Dale Co, ALG +, at 77 years of age.¹ He was buried in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Dykes Cross Roads, Dale Co, Alabama, 31.61461;-85.56188G.¹
