Biography

Miles Casey. MARRIAGE DATE: Miles had not established an independent household according to the 1833 Barbour Co AL census. Or if he had, he was still living in NC. I assume that he married after the 1833 census and died in 1839 and had three children before 1839. He would have to have been married in the 1833/1834 time frame in Barbour Co AL. The court records of 1842 mention three children. No mention is made of his wife. One could assume that she died before Miles in 1839 or that after her death in about 1842, the children chose grandfather James Casey Sr. as their guardian. The earliest recorded marriages in the Barbour Co AL marriage books are in 1838. In about 1840, the records appear much more complete.

BIRTH YEAR: Miles' brother Lemuel was bornin 1813 and married in 1836 at the age of 23. Assuming that Miles had children as early as 1834 and fought in the Indian Wars, he probably was 16-18 in 1834 which would place his birth year about1814-1818 time frame. This is just an educated guess.
1830 Richmond Co NC: son 10-15 living with parents
1833 Barbour Co AL: may be one of the males<21 living with father Lemuel Casey
Miles Casey was a Private in McInis' Co, 42nd AL Militia during the Creek War. (63)
On 18 Aug1836, Miles Casey purchased land in Range 9 Township 24 which is NW ofClio. His residence was listed as Barbour Co AL. This could have been a land grant as a result of his service in the war. Samuel (who I believe is his brother Lemuel) also purchased land in the same area three months later on Nov 23,1836. Miles Casey served as a private inthe McInis Company of the 42nd AL Militia during the Creek War along with his brother Lemuel. (63)

Andrew Casey also served, but in a different unit. Relationship of Andrew Casey is unknown. Miles died about 1839. Family legend says that after his wife died, Miles committed suicide at a spring near the Pea River Presbyterian Churchin Barbour Co AL. The land that Miles purchased in 1836 was just across the road from the church so he probably committed suicide on his own farm.

The following information comes from the Babour Co AL Orphan Court records on microfilm at the LDS center in Dothan AL. Feb1839 Stephen E. Brown (brother in law, husband of Eliza Casey) &Lemuel Casey (father) appointed as administrators of the estate of Miles Casey, dec'd.
Mar 4, 1839 Stephen Brown was appointed asadministrator of the estate of Miles Casey and ordered to take aninventory of the estate.

Mar 1840 court ordered that the real estate of Miles Casey be sold. Apr 1840 the court ordered that Stephen Brown and Lemuel Casey appear before the court and givean account of the estate May 1840 Lemuel Casey did not appear beforethe court and the judge ordered a 'scinafaicais issue' be made andthat an attachment of Lemuel's person be issued if he did not appearbefore the next court. Aug 1840 Stephen Brown appeared before thecourt and made his return for the estate of Miles Casey. Fielding R.Brown received $37.89 from the estate. May 1841 Stephen Brownannounced that he is ready for a final disposition of the estate ofMiles Casey. He was instructed to give a 40 day notice in publicplaces. Biography

Elisha Matthews was buried in Claybank Cem-Ozark, Dale Co, ALG+.
He. In 1824, a South Carolinian, Elisha Matthews of Darlington District, had accompanied a group to the territory surrounding the confluence ofthe east and west branches of the Choctawhatchee River in what is nowDale Co, AL. Elisha was hired by a Mr. Mills to teach his childrenand those of a few other settlers. This was the first school everheld in southeast Alabama. At the close of his school Mr.Matthews got ready for the homeward journey. The time spend in thiswilderness had seemed long to him because of a special interest he hadin the charming Miss Lacy Dowling, beautiful daughter of ReverentDempsey Dowling, who lived near Elisha's father. On arriving homehe confirmed all the stories of fertile soil, abundance of game, thelong waving grasses that bowed and nodded before every water coursewhere cattle might browse to their hearts' content. But the fateofyoung Elisha was not certain. He paid a visit to his fiancee andtold Lacy of all the wonders of this new world. She listenedintently. But could she leave a home of comfort, the love of fondparents, brothers, sisters, and friends for the hardships and hazardsof unknown lands? Young Matthews pleaded for a decision, promisingthat so soon as his financial circumstances would permit he wouldbuild her an elegant home in which she could reign in royal splendor. He was successful and his heart was filled with joy. In Dec 1824,he returned to the Darlington Dist of SC and married his childhoodsweetheart Lacy Dowling, daughter of Dempsey Dowling. On 2 Mar 1825,the Matthews wagon train arrived at the Block House in Dale Co wherewasappointed paymaster of the Dale Co militia. Elisha held theoffice of Dale County Treasurer from 1839 to 1848 being elected eachterm. In 1848 he resigned to run for the state as a JeffersonianDemocrat. He won by an eight hundred vote majority. But four yearslater, in 1852, as the fires of secession began to be fanned, MrMatthews returned to private life, vowing never again to enterpolitics. He, son of Moses Matthews, Jr., and Mary Ann Truitt, was born on 15 May 1803 in South CarolinaG. near Jeffries Creek.

Elisha Matthews married Lacy Dowling, daughter of Dempsey Dowling and Martha Stokes, on 23 December 1824 in Jeffries Creek, Darlington Dist, SCG+.

Biography

Christopher Averitt was also known as Christopher Averett. He, was born in 1590 in Cornwall, EnglandG+.2,3
Christopher Averitt was a weaver.2 He. It is possible that the family came to the United States to escape religious persecution, since they were of Huguenot extraction and fearless in expression. All the Averetts, whichever way they spell their names, came from these first immigrants in Virginia. [001]
He came over to Charles Co VA on a boat captained by Captain Chelsman, and was bound for his passage for three years. This was a practice in vogue in those days, and the records in the libraries show that he later completed his contract with the captain of the boat for his passage, and was released from his debenture.
TRADITION
The first knowledge of the family name was in France. The name 'Averitt' or 'Averett' would justify this assumption, anyway. The double 't' in the name would indicate that it was of French extraction. Nothing is known of the family during the Middle Ages except that we were of Huguenot extraction, and tradition has it that in 1066 the family, or members of the family, came over to England with William, the Conqueror. [001]

The Averitt family, that which we know anything about, seem to have been tillers of the soil or artisans.

Over spellings of the Averitt name have been Averett, Avritt, Averyt, and Avery.
NAME SPELLING:
Averitt is the correct spelling.
In historical records, the name can be found spelled as Averett,Avritt, Averyt, Avery, Avera, and Everett, Everitt, and others.2

Christopher Averitt married Unknown woChristopherAveritt before 1614.
