Emmett Maud Cox, Sr.. Emmett Maude Cox Sr. was born on 10 Oct 1890 in Dale Co AL. Emmett(called Maud by his family) was raised in Dale Co AL on the familyfarm. He was a school teacher while his brothers all became hardwaremerchants. His father stated that he tried to train Maud in thehardware business but could not keep him in the store. Maudepreferred to play baseball, hunt, and fish. Maud married LillianCaldwell about 1916. They were both teaching in Georgiana AL at thattime. The earliest memories of son Emmett Jr are of living on a farmowned by Grandfather Cox on the outskirts of Slocomb AL on theHartford road. The widow Whitaker lived on the farm next farm towardsSlocomb and the Dean family lived on the farm next to Mrs Whitaker.Maud was farming when not teaching school. He entered the U SArmy on 20 May 1917 in Mobile AL while Lillian remained on the Slocombfarm. Maud was sent to Camp Macon GA for training and subsequentlywas sent to France. He served overseas in the 330th Ambulance Co ofthe 308th Sanitary Train, as a medical corpsman. He was discharged on17 Feb 1919 after the war ended and returned to Slocomb. Duringhis teaching career, Maud taught in Georgiana, Coffee Springs,Ashford, Cottonwood, Shelby Co AL and his last teaching post was asprincipal of the school at Honoraville AL (between Greenville andLuverne). While teaching in Cottonwood, he was stabbed by an irateparent because he had whipped the man's son. Maud was taken to MoodyHospital in Dothan. He nearly died from the wound. Fortunately, theknife missed the heart by inches. Maud engaged in many smallenterprises over the years. He was a truck farmer of watermelons. Heand a Goff cousin once owned a Wo-Co-Pep filling station in Ozark. Maud was an avid fox hunter when he lived in Slocomb, Ashford andCottonwood, as had been his father before him. When his father,Julius Edward Sr, died, Maud inherited two of his father's fox hounds: Rambler and Flashlight. These hounds were fed a hoe cake of cornbread at meal time. Maud and Lillian spent their last years inLuverne AL. Maud was a large heavy set man. He liked to eat and wasa heavy smoker. He suffered a stroke in 1949 that resulted in aparalyzed right side. He had another strokein 1956 and washospitalized in the Montgomery Veterns Hospital until his death in1957 of heart failure.
