On 3 Oct 1858 in Pike Co AL at age 24, he married Susan Jane Banks ofAL who was about 13. Their first child, John J, was born about a yearand a half later in Mar 1860 when Susan was about 15..

When wife Susan Jane died in Oct 1874, William is supposed to havecaught a cold and refused medical attention and died 24 Nov 1874. Hewas buried in what is now known as the Ballard Hill cemetery next tohis mother, Nancy McKnight Ballard, and his brother, Robert SamuelBallard.
After William E died in 1874, the children were adopted by family andothers. What happened to the oldest, John J. is unknown. In 1880Robert was living at the Pike Co jail with his aunt and uncle, ColemanCarpenter and Martha Ballard where Coleman was the county jailer. In1900, there is a James Ballard age 33 who is single and a farm laborerfor James W. Turner in Pike Co AL. Dora went to live with her AuntKate Rice. Maude Victoria was adopted by a Thomas (P or T) Blair.
