Biography

Alsa B. McCarty was cabinet maker, mechanic, farmer. He. There were two parties in Dale Co AL in 1846 who were bitter enemies.One of the parties was lead and controlled by Alsa B. McCarty. Therewas really no issue between them, it was simply who was the bestfighter. The only man that Arch Justice of the Claybank communityjust west of Daleville could not beat in a fight was Alsa. On two orthree ocassions they met in John Kimmey's horse pen and battered oneanother toe-to-toe without either one of them gaining the advantage.
One night an attack was made upon Gappa T. Yelverton at his house nearMcCarty's bridge across Claybank Creek with the intention toassassinate him, and he became so alarmed that he hired a guard andstationed them at his house every night for some time. After theattack was made upon him, he had warrants taken out for Alsa B.McCarty, T. W. McCarty, and W. A. McCarty, and for Judge PhillipMcCarty, the father of the three first named. The Judge was arrestedbut the others eluded the officer. The Judge was teken to Newton andin the meantime he had sent to Eufaula for James L. Pugh to defendhim, and Yelverton acted for the prosecution. A great many personsattendedthe trial, and many witnesses were in attendance, and thetrial lasted about two days, and ended without a conviction. The boyswere never arrested, and ultimately it died out without any moretrouble. (NOTE: Gappa T. Yelverton was probate judge of Dale Countyfrom 1841 to 1846, and during the Civil War he was probate judge ofCoffee Co).
