His wife was the sister of his friend Estienne De Lancey. She was a Huguenot and died in France but there is no record. [032]
According to family tradition, Jean, a Huguenot fled from his churc hin France in 1685 by escaping though a window and departing on the back of a donkey. Apparently, a Catholic priese and a long time friend of the family warned Jean of the fact that soldiers were on their way to arrest him for being a Huguenot that would not convert to catholicism. The priest arranged for a boat in Calais to take Jean,his two sons, and Estienne De Lancey to England. [032]
They went to Roterdam via Calais and then to London. Jean entered England under the name Jean Barberie de Saint Contest. [032].
