CSA UNIT HISTORY:
The 45th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn in May1862. Companies that made up the unit were from the counties of Barbour, Randolph, Lowndes, Macon, and Russell. It was immediately sent to Corinth. At Tupelo it lost many men by disease, but in the autumn it moved into KY, part of Patton Anderson's Brigade. It charged a battery at Perryville and suffered severely in casualties. The regiment came out of KY with the army and was soon after engaged inthe battle of Murfreesboro where its casualties were numerous. Placed in the brigade of Gen'l Sterling A. M. Wood of Lauderdale, Cleburne's Division (with the 16th, 26th, 50th, and 33rd AL regiments), the 45th remained on duty with the Army of Tennessee, passing the first half of the year 1863 at Tullahoma. it fought under the eye of Gen'l PatCleburne at Chicamauga, and its mutilated ranks told the eloquentstory of its services. Gen'l Mark Lowery of Mississippi succeeded tothe command of the brigade, and the 45th was present at Mission Ridgeand Ringgold Gap with slight loss. The winter was passed at Dalton, and the regiment took a full share in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, especially at Resaca, and at New Hope, where Cleburne's Division grappled with Union Gen'l John A. Logan's Corps. On the 22nd of July,at Atlanta, 'Death' reveled in its ranks, and half the regiment went down on the hard-fought field. Six weeks later it again fought 'where Cleburne crossed the line' at Jonesboro, with considerable loss. Then followed the long and disastrous march into TN. The 45th opened the battle at Franklin the evening before by a brilliant fight at Springhill, and the next day was in the bloody and desperate assault of Cleburne's Division on the enemy's works, and was almost annihilated around the corpse of its heroic division commander. Its colors floated before Nashville, and a remnant of the 45th moved into North Carolina. It was there consolidated with other Alabama regiments, and surrendered with Gen'l Joseph E. Johnston's forces.

Statistics: It was organized with 750 men, reported 91 casualties at Murfreesboro, and 117 at Chickamauga, and totaled 366 effectives and 309 arms in December 1863. The regiment lost 27 k, 72 w, and 32 missing at the Battle of Atlanta and was almost annihilated at Franklin. Only a remnant surrendered on 26 April 1865.

Field officers: Cols. Ephraim B. Breedlove, James G. Gilchrist,Willism S. Goodwyn, and Harris D. Lampley; Lt. Col. Robert H.Abercrombie; and Major George C. Freeman.
Alfred Lemuel Casey, Sr., died on 20 September 1863 in Chickamauga, Walker Co, GeorgiaG. during Civil War. He witnessed the New Tag of Nancy and Alfred Lemuel Casey, Sr., in 1865.

Hampton Casey appeared in the agricultural census in 1850 in Barbour Co, ALG+. Hampton Casey has the following assets: 30 ac of improved land,$100-cash value of farm, $15 - value of farm implements and machinery,1 horse, 2 working oxen, 6 swine, $100 - value of livestock, grew: 150 bushels of Indian corn 1 cotton guard, and 50 bushels of sweet potatoes.

Hampton Casey was the Head of Household in the census in 1850 in Mt Andrew, Barbour Co, ALG. Hampton and his family are living next door to his father. Hampton Casey 26 NC farmer, Epsey 28 NC, Sarah 6 AL, Thomas 5 AL, James 2 AL, and William 4/12 AL.3
On 1 November 1858 a land grant of [m1] acres was issued to Hampton Casey in Barbour Co, ALG+. [m2].

Hampton Casey was the Head of Household in the census in 1860 in Mt Andrew, Barbour Co, ALG. Hamp Casey 36 NC ($900-$200), Hepsy 38 NC, Sarah 16 AL, Asbury 14 AL, James 12 AL, William 10 AL, Mary 7 AL, Virginia 5 AL, Daniel 3 AL, and Calvin 7/12 AL.1

. On Mar 27, 1865, the estate of Lewis Price paid Hepsy Casey, wife of Hampton Casey, the sum of 50 dollars in confederate money. [160 B15]page 517 (Based on this entry, it is unclear to me whether Hampton is alive or dead)

In the 1866 Barbour Co census T11R25, (311 022 010), in the householdof Mrs. Hepsey Casey, there are 3 males < 10, 1 10-20, and 1 >20,females 0 <10, 2 10-20, and 2 >20, and 0 soldiers killed in the war, 1 soldier died as a result of the war, and 0 were disabled. No war records could be found for Hampton.

On Sept 4, 1866, the appraisal of the estate of Hampton Casey deceased is presented to the court. The estate consisted of 80 acres of land appraised @ $2.50 per acre for a total of $200. [160 B15] p460 Land description was not given. (in my land record research, I only have 40 acres for Hampton at this point in time. It is near Mt Andrew.
Hepsey Casey is listed in the 1870 Barbour Co census without husband Hamp. According to the 1866 census Hampton was not living and there was one male > 20. That would have to be the oldest son Thomas Asbury who would just be 20. Therefore Hampton had to be the soldier who died as a result of the war. Notice that the census makes a distinction between soldiers who were killed and those who died as a result of the war.

Biography

Henry Boldin Casey was also known as Bud Casey. He was also known as Boldin Casey. He. Bolden Casey first appears in records at the age of 2 in the 1860Barbour Co AL census in the household of James Calvin Casey Jr. andwife Mary Bishop. According to the family bible of sister Julie AnnCasey, Bolden was May 12, 1858.
According to the 1900 census, Bolden was born Dec 1856. I have chosento use the bible record since the census records for this family varysignificantly every 10 years.
1860 Barbour Co AL census: Bolden 2 AL living with parents
1870 Barbour Co AL census: Henry 16 living with James and Mary Casey.
Bolden Casey does not appear at age 12 in the James Jr. household inthe 1870 Barbour Co AL census. This has led to some confusion as tothe correct parents of Bolden since he named a son Alfred Joe(Tannon). There was also an Alfred Casey in Barbour Co AL about thesame time. He had a son named Alfred who appears in the 1870 MonroeCo AL census at age 10 with his mother (Alfred died in the war) butnot in the 1860 census when his parents lived in Barbour Co AL.
However there is a lot of inconsistancy in the many census records ofthe James Calvin Casey Jr. household. Probably several of the censusrecords were contributed by neighbors. In my opinion, for thisparticular family, it is not an overriding factor that a child wasmissing from one census.
1880 Boldin married Liddy Jane Thomas about 1880 prior to the censusand they had 10 children.
