David Franklin Averett was both parents born in GA. He. One of the oldest citizens of Winnfield by reason of years is David Francis Averette, Confederate Veteran, who has reached his 89th birth, today, Feb 25, 1926.
At this ripe old age, Mr. Averett is hale and hearty and energetic. He works his garden, neer has a horse to plow it, but spades ithimself, and afterwards uses a garden plow. He makes all necessaryrepairs on his house and fence and when asked to what he attributeshis active old age, he replied that plenty of exercise in the open airand regular habits in eating and sleeping had kept him fit.
Mr. Averette has a splendid war record, serving in the Infantry, 15Alabama Regiment from 61 to 65 under Lee and Jackson. On May 6, 1864he was wounded at the Battle of Wilderness in VA and his wife who isnow 80 years old says she is proud of that bullet wound in hisforehead for it shows that he was facing the enemy. He narrowlyescaped death when the bullet passed under the skin and exited at theother side of the forehead.
After this wound, Mr. Averett did no more field service but wasdetailed for courier service. It was during this time ofconvalescence and recuperation from his wounds that he was married toMiss Martha A. Timmerman in Alabamaon Dec 8, 1864, three weeks aftergoing back to his regiment in VA where he remained until he was givenan honorable discharge at the close of the war.
Mr. and Mrs. Averette have been married 62 years, have reared a largeand useful family and now are happy in their old age. They moved toWinnfield about 13 years ago.
