In the 1860 Pike Co AL census, Sarah J. C.'s age was listed as 17 and. They had at least three children. Mollie D. and William Benjaminboth died young during the Civil War. In the 1870 census, her namewas listed as Kate and her age as 24. Daughter Martha J was 11 in the1870 census. She was not living with her parents in 1880. It isunknown if she died or married. It is likely that she married sinceif she had died, she probably would have been buried with her brotherand sister.
In the 1880 Pike Co census, niece Dora Ballard, daughter of the lateWilliam E. Ballard was living with William and Kate. Kate's age waslisted as 38.
After the death of her first husband, Kate married Wesley G. Cox. Hisfirst wife died in Jan of 1892. It was the second marriage for both.Wesley was 58 and Kate was 43. Lemuel Casey married Julia Anne Simmons, daughter of Daniel Hargett Simmons and Eliza Anne Grady.
Lemuel Casey, son of Richard Casey and Polly Smith, was born in 1833 in Wayne Co, NCG. Lemuel Casey. Just prior to the outbreak of the War Between the States, Lemuel and Julia and their two little girls went to Demopolis AL to make a new life. Letters written by Lemuel to Julia's father tell of their life there and of how lonely they were for their relatives. They had family pictures made which are entered along with this article.
Lemuel made a trip back to Wayne Co without his family in 1861. His trip from AL to NC and back to AL cost seventy dollars which was ten dollars less than he had expected, so one letter goes. It was Lemuel's intention to ell his Wayne Co property but he did not. Instead he returned to AL and in 1862 returned with his family to NC. He settled his wife and daughters in Dudley, NC at their old home and elisted Oct 7, 1862 in Co A, Forty Third Regiment. He died Feb 12,1863 in Goldsboro of smallpox and is buried in Willowdale cemetery in Goldsboro.
Julia died Dec 10, 1862 two months after Lemuel enlisted and is buriedat the old Simmons home near Albertson NC. Julia's tombstone reads'Julian', a contraction of Julia Anne.
The two little Casey girls were reared by the Casey family. Mary Elizabeth married Christopher Wright Smith and Wilhelmina 'Will' married William Potts. Both families have many descendants.
Lemuel Casey died on 12 February 1863 in Goldsboro, Wayne Co, North CarolinaG. He was buried in Willowdale Cemetery, Goldsboro, Wayne Co, North CarolinaG.
