John Fowler began military service about 1775. when he enlisted as a private for six months (having received a bounty of three dollars and a pair of boots) at Matthews Old Field in Duplin Co where he was a resident. Some sources say Sampson Co but Sampson wasn't formed until after the war in 1784. During this first tour of duty he was a Minuteman serving under the command of Col James Kenanat at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge near Wilmington on Feb 27 1766. His enlistment ran out shortly afterwards.

7,9 After a few months in 1776. his second enlistment was for 12 months in the First Regiment of the NC Continental Line under command of Col Alfred Moore. That outfit marched from Wilmington NC to Charleston SC and back. He was discharged and received a written discharge which he afterwards gave to Jeremiah Vereen of SC in order to get his pay. He never received any pay.
9 John Fowler. allowed about a year to elapse before volunteering again as a private around the spring of 1778 for the Sampson Co (Duplin Co) Militia. It was commanded by Capt William Vann, with John Matthews as Lieutenant. The company was stationed at Holly Shelter (in present day Pender Co) until overwhelmed by a superior British force and were ordered to disperse and return home, throwing their ammunition in the river along the way. John had no documentation of this service.
