Biography

Luke R Simmons was also known as Luke Simmons. He was also known as Luke R Summonds. He, son of Unknown Simmons, was born on 12 June 1809 in Columbus Co, NCG+. Birth date varies depending on the source. Find A Grave list Luke Simmons and Priscilla Soles as his parents but this is incorrect.1
Most family trees on ancestry.com lists the parents of [p1] and [p2] as Luke Russell Sr and Priscilla Soles probably due to having the same name. There is no known documentation that supports this. I have not seen this Luke Simmons referred to as Luke Jr in any documentation. Additionally no documentation has been found to support the suffix Sr for Luke Russell Simmons who married Priscilla Soles. I recently discovered (Dec 2015) a transcription of the family bible of Luke R Simmons and Priscilla Soles in the Troy, Pike Co AL library practically rules out this possibility. Because Luke Jr and John Jr moved together and married sisters, it can be assumed (but not proven) that they were probably brothers. They have been assigned as sons of Unknown Simmons for tracking purposes. It is difficult to determine the timing of the family moves because the birth states of the children vary from census to census.2

Luke R Simmons married Sarah Ann Waters, daughter of Dawson Waters and Elizabeth Watson, before 1830. probably Clarke Co MS.3,4

Luke R Simmons was the Head of Household in the census in 1830 in Washington Co, ALG. Luke Simmons: males 1 20-29 (1801-1810); females 1 15-19 (1811-1815). Living next to John Simmons.3

Luke R Simmons was the Head of Household in the census in 1840 in Clarke Co, MSG. Luke R Summonds: males 2<5 (1836-1840 Allen, Isaac), 1 5-9 (1831-1835 John B) , 1 30-39 (1801-1810 Luke) ; females 1 5-9 (1831-1835 Julia), 1 15-19 (1821-1825 ?), 1 20-29 (1811-1820 wife). Living in same county as John R.4
Sarah Ann Waters, the wife of [S], died [d] [l] at [a] years of age. [m1].4,5

Luke R Simmons age 32 married Sarah Ann Hammonds age ~26 on 14 December 1841 in Pike Co, ALG+. According to family trees on ancestry.com, Luke married Sarah Ann Waters before the 1830 census. A Luke Simmons married Sarah Ann Hammonds in Pike Co on Dec 14 1841 according to Pike Co marriage records. The only other Luke Simmons of marrying age in 1841 was the son of Daniel Simmons and Elizabeth Simmons. He was married to a Loryann in 1850. Therefore the children living with Luke in the 1850 census who are older than 9 would be the children of Sarah Waters and the children born after 1841 could be the children of Sarah Ann Hammonds.6,7

Luke R Simmons died in 1896 in Coffee Co, ALG+, at ~87 years of age. Some family trees list his death as Geneva Co AL/.1,12 He was buried in Haney Cemetery, Coffee Co, Alabama, 31.22440;-86.01440G. Find A Grave Memorial # is. 125962016. There is no photo on Find-A-Grave. So I don't know if this is just a guess or a fact.12
