Biography

Richard Hudson, I. Richard Hudson shipped from London on the 'Safety' in 1635. The court records of Accomack Co VA records that Richard Hudson sued Hannah Savage, the widow of Thomas Savage, for back wages. The debt apparently occurred in 1634. Hannah Savage was in the tobacco trade and presumably, Richard Hudson was an employee. This suggests that Richard had lived in Accomack VA prior to 1634. Furthermore, court records suggest that Richard Hudson was widowed with two children, a boy and a girl. Henry Hudson, the son, was born in 1632. The name and age of the daughter is unknown. Both children were placed in the home of James Bruce.
A good guess would be that Richard was widowed about 1633-34. He apparently took a tobacco shipment to England as an agent for Hannah Savage.
In about 1638, Richard married Mary Hayes, the widow of John Hayes. Mary Hayes had at least one daughter, Ruth. This daughter was placed in the home of John Johnson.
Richard must have been an unsavory character. On several occasions he was brought to court on various charges from stealing chickens to stealing hogs. He also was fined for fighting.
Richard was a coastal trader, farmer and miller. In 1638, Richard Hudson and Mary Hayes were each given twelve lashes for slandering Sampson and Alice Robins. The Robins were also given twelve lashes each for calling Mary Hayes a 'badd as aine salte bitch.'
The question arises as to the relationship of Richard Hudson of Accomack Co VA to Henry Hudson the navigator and the Muscovy Company. It is to be noted that Richard Hudson's cattle brand and hog mark was the fleur-de-lis. This same emblem was used by the Muscovy Company.
There is one near certainty. Richard Hudson of Accomack Co VA was notthe son of Henry Hudson, the navigator, and Katherine Hudson. This Richard Hudson was an articulate factor of the Muscovy Company in India. Richard Hudson Hudson in Accomack Co VA was illerate and signed his name with a mark.
Afer his marriage to Mary Hayes and the birth of a son, Nicholas, in abt 1639, the reputation of Richard and Mary began to improve.
By 1643, Richard was sitting on the County Court. In 1652, Richard Hudson was given custody of Gideon Tillison Jr, the son of his friend and tennant, Gideon Tillison, deceased.
In 1757, Mary Hayes Hudson was deceased. Richard and son, Nicholas, moved a few miles south to Northampton Co VA. At about the same time, Richard married Barbara Jacobs. In 1659, Richard made a nuncupative will to divide his estate between 'my youngest son, Nicholas' and wife Barbara Jacobs Hudson. The will states that Richard had provided for his other 'two children'. This to be definitive proof that Richard had three children. Henry b. abt 1632, a 'girlie' and Nicholas b. abt 1639.
