Biography

Samuel Casey. Based on the assumption that Jermiah's children were listed in his will in birth order, Samuel Casey would have been born about 1770 whenJeremiah was about 16 and Nancy about 14-16. James and Lemuel were mentioned as the youngest sons in Jeremiah's will. The approximate age is known for most of Jeremiah's children and it supports the theory that they are listed in order of birth.
Based on census records, he was born about 1702 probably in Dobbs Co NC. Jeremiah was documented in Dobbs Co in 1769 and in 1779
1790 Census of Newbern District of Wayne Co NC, p150. Jeremiah Casey:1 male > 16, 3 males < 16, and 4 females, no slaves. Jeremiah onlylists 3 sons in his will: Samuel, James, and Lemuel. The bestestimate for Lemuel's birth is 1791. So it is possible that Jeremiahhad another son who was not living at the time of his will.
1812 partial Richmond Co NC tax list: Samuel Casey. Jeremiah's son Samuel would have been about 42 at the time. James and Jeremiah are listed on the 1806 list but not on the partial 1812 list. [245]
1826 Carteret Co NC - a Samuel Casey died. [147]. He, son of Jeremiah M Casey and Nancy, was born about 1770 in Dobbs Co, NCG+. educated guess.
Samuel Casey was the Head of Household in the census in 1790 in Wayne Co, NCG. Jeremiah Casey: 1 male > 16, 3 males < 16, and 4 females, no slaves.2
[S] may be listed in the household of Jeremiah M Casey in the in 1790 census in Wayne Co, NCG. Jeremiah Casey: 1 male > 16 (Jeremiah), 3 males < 16 (?, James, ?); 4 females (Nancy, 3 of the following Mary, Lovey, Elizabeth, Nancy, and Sarah); no slaves. There is at least one unidentified male <16 in this census. If the 2nd unidentified male is Samuel and the census is correct, then Samuel would not have been born before 1775.2,3
On 17 April 1810 Samuel Casey. son Sanuel Casey mentioned in Jeremiah Casey's will Type: HEIR.4
On 6 December 1811 in the will of Jeremiah M Casey in Richmond Co, NCG, son Samuel Casey was listed as an heir.34
Samuel Casey died after 1812. possibly Richmond Co NC.

Herbert Weldon Ballard, son of Thomas Weldon Ballard and Jane Catherine Simmons, was born on 8 May 1873 in Milo, Pike Co, ALG. now Spring Hill.1,2,3,4,5,6,5,4,8,3,2,7

His fiancee, Vannie Lee Smart, died on 24 December 1902 in Pike Co, ALG+, at 26 years of age. They were engaged to be married on Tuesday night, Dec 23. On the previous Saturday night, she was taken sick with stomach trouble and rapidly grew worse until her death on Wednesday morning.9,10
. In 1907 he represented Pike Co AL in the state legislature, serving simultaneously with his brother Walter Eugene Ballard from Autauga Co. While in Montgomery, he met Johnnie Mae Culver who was a bookkeeper at Montgomery Fair (presently Dillard's) in Montgomery.
Herbert Weldon Ballard was a son of Thomas Weldon Ballard in the census in 1910 in Spring Hill, Pike Co, ALG. Herbert 37 AL farmer.3

Herbert Weldon Ballard age 39 married Johnnie Mae Culver age 29, daughter of Tasso Uranus Culver and Sarah Elvie Locke, on 25 November 1912 in Maplesville, Chilton Co, ALG.5,5

In 1916. the family moved from Spring Hill in Pike Co into Troy when Catherine was two.
On 12 September 1918 Herbert Weldon Ballard was living in Troy, Pike Co, ALG, when he enrolled for the World War I draft. Occupations: farmer, life insurance, farm loans. He was tall, slender build, brown eyes, dark hair.6

Herbert Weldon Ballard was the Head of Household in the census in 1920 in Troy, Pike Co, ALG. Herbert Ballard 49 insurance agent, Johnnie Mae 39, Catherine 6.8
. In the 1920s, Herbert was attacked by a drunken negro, Lee Cotton, on his way back from Troy. As Cotton advanced, Ballard fired his pistol with the bullet passing through Cotton's hat. Cotton then stabbed at Ballard's throat with a white bone handled knife. Ballard threw up his arm and received the blow in the muscle of the arm, with two inches of the knife blade breaking off in his arm leaving a stub about three-fourths of an inch long. Cotton continued to make about fifteen thrusts, four or five of which made gashes on Ballard's head and face. The fact that the knife blade broke with the first stab doubtless saved Ballard's life. A Mr. Lott who lived nearby, ran out and ran Cotton off. Ballard shot Cotton as he was fleeing making a flesh wound in the calf of his right leg. Cotton was arrested and placed in the Troy jail.
In 1925 he attended a Pacific Mutual Life Ins Co convention in Birmingham where he won one of the capital prizes, which was a magnificant Auto Restaurant, which was offered to the four highest producers during the year 1924.
In 1926, Ballard Brothers was offered $1,000 for 200 acres of timber. In 1925, they had offers on the same timber from $500 to $3,000. They hired a cruiser for $25. He found that they had 750,00 board feet of hardwood and 1,000,000 board feet of pine. They sold the hardwood for $3,000 and the pine for $3,500.
About 1926, Herbert took a two week trip to Colorado Springs to attend the annual convention of the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co. He was recognized as the 18th ranked agent out of more than twelve hundred underwriters for 1925. He was a member of the Big Tree Club of PMLIC.

About 1931, he went to Cincinnati upon invitation of the Union Central Life Insurance Co where he received special recognition for writing $150,000 of life insurance within a given time. He ranked No. 3 out of over three thousand agents.
In 1931, he co-signed a telegram to the Governor requesting a bill prohibiting the planting of cotton in 1932 in order to boost cotton prices.
Herbert was a Democrat and a Kiwanian.

Biography

Lovey Casey was also known as Lovey Allman. She. Based on census records and assuming that Jeremiah Casey's children are listed in his will in order of birth, Lovey Casey was born CA1780.

Lovey and William married against their parents wishes. They fled on foot and went to Union Co SC. [280]
They lived first at 'Wildcat' on Broad River just south of Pickneyville, and he ran a store in the little community of Reidville.
William was a carpenter, merchant, millwright.
1800 census location unknown. Not found in SC or NC. In Richmond Co NC, there is a Gideon, John, and Rhuben Almon, and a Kinchen Almonds.
William and Lovey moved to Union Co SC sometime in the early 1800's.
According to a family story, sometime between 1820 and 1830 William left with the children and went to Elbert Co GA. Lovey was unhappy with this move and walked to GA and got her children. She took the children while William was building a mill not far from the home. On the way back to Union, her son Alfred became ill. He died and was buried along side the road near Greenville, SC. William was never heard from again. It is about 140 miles from Union Co SC to Elbert Co GA. So there is some doubt about her walking the distance.
Lovey was supposedly buried on the plantation of son William Ursa Alman. Exact location is unknown.

Nancy A. Casey was also known as Nancy A. Kemp. She. Nancy A. Casey was born in 1828 probably in Richmond Co NC. presents some what of a problem. Also living in the household are Mary 7 and James 3. Are these Nancy's children?
1830 Richmond Co NC: female < 5 living with parents
1833 Barbour Co AL: figure out which one
1840 Barbour Co AL: female 10-15 living with father and step mother
1850 Barbour Co AL: Nancy 23 NC can't read/write living with fatherJames. Also living there Mary 7 AL and James 3 AL
Her 1854 marriage to Thomas Kemp was in the local papers so that it appears that it is her first marriage.
In the 1860 census, Nancy 32 is living with husband Thomas Kemp 26 in the Mt. Andrew community just two households away from her father and his new wife, Nancy DeShazo. Living with Thomas and Nancy is James M.Casey 15 AL. This is probably the same James as in James Sr.'s 1850household. Again what relation is he to Nancy?
T Kemp appears in the 1866 Barbour Co AL census living in T11 R27which is about halfway between Eufaula and the Mt. Andrew community.Today (1998), there are no roads directly connecting this area withthe Mt. Andrew community. One would have to travel from White Oak toClayton and then to Mt. Andrew. The general area is around White Oak. This probably is not the same location where he lived. Nancy'sfather was living in T11 R25 which is the same location where hepurchased land in 1836 so it is likely that the Kemp family has movedbetween 1860 and 1866.
In the 1866 household are a male and female both over 20 and 2 malesand 2 females all <10. No soldier in the household was killed, diedor disabled as a result of the Civil War. Also living in this samearea in 1866 is T Casey whose household consisted solely of one male10-20. Since the only known brother of Nancy whose name began with a'T' was Tillman who was living in Louisianna, this would have to be acousin. This is likely Thomas Asbury Casey, son of Hampton.
No further record has been found of Thomas Kemp and Nancy Casey in theBarbour Co AL records. There are not located in 1870 in Barbour CoAL. Nancy's father and stepmother, James Casey Sr. also are locatedin the 1866 census but not in the 1870 census. Hampton's familyappears in the Mt. Andrew area in 1866 (without Hampton) but by 1870,Hepsey has moved to Eufaula.
