During the late 1700s, several groups of Averetts moved to Georgia Some have been identified as descendants of Christopher Averitt who came to America in the 1600s. His ancestors spread throughout the country and some came to GA.

The Averetts who moved to the area of Washington, Warren, and Hancock Counties in Georgia appear to be descendants of Everetts who lived in South Carolina. They lived near each other and shared in events. Circumstantial evidences suggests that these Averetts were related but no definite relationship has been determined. DNA analysis also suggests that descendants of this group of Averetts are related but the generational distance is too big for more detailed analysis.

Further research is hampered by the following:

  • No wills have been found for these Averetts

  • Most of the original land grants to these Averetts were located in Washington Co which was formed in 1789. The original county was very large and over the years has been divided into nine different counties. There was no grid system at this time. Sometimes land grant plats name a water course but often the only identifications were trees or some one else's property lines.

  • During the Civil War, General Sherman destroyed many of the early records of Washington Co. There are no tax or land records until about 1815.

  • The Averetts lived in the portion of Washington that became Hancock in 1793. Most of the early tax records for Hancock no longer exist. The few that do exist are only found on microfilm at the GA Archives or the Mormon Church.

  • Marriages were not required to be recorded in Georgia until about 1806. By this time, many of the next generation were already married.

  • There are no US Census records for Georgia for 1790, 1800, and 1810 thanks to the War of 1812. There are a few census records for 1820.

  • Frequent subdividing of counties and addition of new counties meant that many lived in a new county every few years even if they never moved. Records for new counties for the first couple of years are not available.

Unknown Averett, was born estimated 1720. Guess based on John being married in 1769 and Wm's birth about 1740.
