1 . As a child, he had an operation for appendicitis on a table at his home in the 'Brooks house' by a Dr. Hunter from Union Springs. It was the first operation performed at Perote. In 1894, James played on one of the first football teams of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (later renamed Auburn University).He was also an early member of the Sigma Nu fraternity which had been co-founded by his older brother, Jesse Locke Culver. He received a Bachelor degree from API in 1896 and later a Masters degree from API. At one time, he was taught in a Junior College in Jackson AL.He also attended school at the University of Tennessee. He later was a professor of Greek and Latin at Austin College in Texas for five years. About 1905, he moved to San Antonio, TX and bought a very select, small school (Texas Military Institute) with the express purpose of training students for entrance into the larger EasternUniversities. On 19 Jun 1906, James married Lillian Vinson at Sherman, TX. Daughter Sarah Elizabeth was born at Sherman on 2 Jun 1907. On 8 Jun 1926, he attended a homecoming at Perote, AL and 'Delivered a telling address, pregnant with the spirit of the home'. About 500 people were in attendance. He leased the school from1926 to 1936 and then re-purchased TMI and operated it until 1952 when it was repurchased by the Episcopal Church. In 1936, he retired as Professor Emeritus with a substantial pension for life and half that amount to be paid to his estate for five years after his death.J ames died in San Antonio TX on 5 Feb 1961.

John Latimer Culver was CSA, Co K, 15th GA Regiment, 1st LT. He. John L. Culver , born 26 Dec 1829 in Hancock Co GA, was the son ofHardy Callaway Culver and Nancy Latimer. It is possible that hismiddle name is Latimer but no reference to that effect has been found. He was raised onthe plantation and given a good, practicaleducation. John married Nancy Cheely on 12 Nov 1850 in Hancock CoGA. They had four children who lived to maturity. John and hisbrothers and sister, after marrying, made their homes in and nearCulverton which had been named aftertheir father Hardy C. Culver.There were intermarriages with neighboring families of Moores, Rileys,Latimers, and Cheelys. Their descendents still live in Culverton. In July 1861, he entered the Confederate service as Captain ofCompany K, Fifteenth Georgia Regiment and served in the heavycampaigns in Virginia and Maryland and Virginia until 1863, when theutter breaking down of his health made his resignation from the army anecessity. When Sherman with his army invaded Georgia, Captain Culveragain entered the army, this time as escort to General Gustavus Smithof the State troops, in whose service he continued to the close of thewar. The remainder of his life was spent in farming. He combineda scientific knowledge of agriculture with business ability andfitness for public life which gave him state wide popularity. He wasthe first farmer in Georgiato use terraces on their plantation. Inpolitics, he was a staunch Democrat; and in the reconstruction perioddid a great service The remainder of his life was spent infarming. He combined a scientific knowledge of agriculture withbusiness ability and fitness for public life which gave him state widepopularity. In politics, he was a staunch Democrat; and in thereconstruction period did a great service in ridding his county of themisrule of negroes, scalawags, and carpetbaggers. He represented hisparty in the lower house during the sessions of 1872-1875; and in1890represented the twentieth senatorial district in the GeneralAssembly. He was Chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee, andPresident of the Democratic Party organization of Hancock County; asteward in the Methodist Church; and a member of the MasonicFraternity. Four of his children lived to maturity. When theBank of Sparta was organized, Captain Culver was electedVice-President and made a Director.
