John Thomas Hicks. _ Type: GENERAL NOTES.¹ He. John Thomas Hicks was one of 11 children. During his years as a youngchild, John Thomas Hicks lived on Mountain Creek in Rechmond Co on afarm which his father owned. [155]
However, the family moved to Cheraw, SC, while he was still a child sothat his father could go to Meridian, MS to establish a homestead neartwo of his brothers who had moved there earlier.
While in Mississippi, the father became ill, died and was buriedthere. The mother returned with her family to the farm on MountainCreek in Richmond County.
In returning to Richmond County, the family traveled along the westside of the Pee Dee River until they found a place which appeared tobe safe for fording the river with the covered wagons which containedall of their household and personal belongings. Here, misfortunestruck the family again when the swift currents swept away almost allof the family possessions. Fortunately all members of the familyescaped drowning. [155]
During this time the actual fighting of the Civil War began, and thetwo oldest sons, Charlie and Edward, were taken into the ConfederateArmy. John Thomas, only five years old at the time, was the only maleleft at home,and working the farm became too much for the widow. SoJulia moved her family to the Great Falls Mill Village in Rockinghamwhere the girls could find employment. They were living at thislocation when the mill was burned by the Union Army. [155]
During the occupation of the village by the Yankee soldiers, Safronie,the youngest of the children, had a pet chicken that was killed by oneof the soldiers. Safronie's crying created such a disturbance that aUnion officer came to investigate the trouble. Upon being told whathappened, he immediately placed a guard at the house and promisedJulia that the family would not be bothered again. The mill was seton fire and as it burned a soldier, having torn a fiddle from thehands of a neighbor, played 'Pop Goes the Weasel.' After finishinghis performance, he threw the fiddle into the air and smashed it intobits as it hit the ground. [155]
After the destruction of the milll, the family moved to the CartledgeCreek Area and attended the Cartledge Creek Baptist Church. Whileliving at this location, John Thomas and Martha Sanford were married,Sep 19, 1877. (12)
John Thomas and Martha Sanford lived for some time in the CartledgeCreek Community where several of their ten children were born. Laterthey bought a small farm between Zion and Cordova. He was a farmer, acarpenter, and an accomplished blacksmith. His brother Ned had marriedMartha's sister, Mary Jane Sanford 'Mollie' ten years earlier.[155]
Eight of their ten children married and settledin Richmond Co. Two oftheir sons moved to SC, John E. to Spartanburg and Henry Harrison toUnion. [155]. He, son of Edward R. 'Ned' Hicks and Julia Ann Smith, was born on 27 August 1855 in Richmond Co, NCG.
